SUMMARY:Mercer Oak Award Reception
DESCRIPTION:Mercer Oak Award Reception\nThe Board of Trustees of the Princeton Battlefield Society invites you to honor \n2026 Mercer Oak Award Honouree: Lorna Hainesworth\n \nThe enduring symbol of the Princeton Battlefield and the Battle of Princeton\, fought on January 3\, 1777\, is the Mercer Oak\, against which tradition suggests General Hugh Mercer was placed after being mortally wounded. He later gave his life for the American cause.Today\, a new-generation Mercer Oak grows at the battlefield\, continuing to symbolize how Princeton helped alter the course of the American Revolution in favor of independence. The Mercer Oak Award represents the spirit and heritage of America’s fight for independence. It reflects what visitors to the Princeton Battlefield still feel today—the enduring meaning of the freedom and independence for which Washington\, Mercer\, and their troops fought to secure.Presented by the Princeton Battlefield Society\, the Mercer Oak Award recognizes individuals whose dedication and leadership advance the preservation of American history and the legacy of the Princeton Battlefield. \nAbout Lorna Hainesworth\nThe Princeton Battlefield Society is proud to present the 2026 Mercer Oak Award to Lorna Hainesworth\, a generous benefactor of the Society and a strong supporter of Experience the Battle of Princeton. \n\n“Honoring Lorna with our Mercer Oak Award\,” said Ben Strong\, President of the Princeton Battlefield Society\, “is a tribute to her outstanding philanthropic efforts on behalf of numerous national American Revolution sites and organizations\, including the Princeton Battlefield. She is an involved leader and friend\, and we are thrilled to honor and thank her with our 2026 Mercer Oak Award.” \n\nWith the Nation’s 250th Anniversary approaching\, it is especially fitting to recognize her dedication to preserving and promoting the history and heritage of the American Revolution. \nLorna Hainesworth has played an important role in supporting the preservation\, interpretation\, and continued public engagement with Revolutionary War history across the country. \nAbout the Invitation Artwork\nThe painting featured on this year’s Mercer Oak Award invitation is George Matthews Harding’s mural of Washington’s troops crossing the Delaware on December 25\, 1776. \nPainted for the Trenton Opera House in 1921\, the mural was removed from the building in the late 1960s and stored in a North Jersey basement\, where it remained largely forgotten for nearly fifty years. \nThe mural has since been restored by the Washington Crossing Park Association and is now on display in the new Washington Crossing State Park Museum & Visitor Center. \nLorna Hainesworth was a proud contributor to the restoration of this historic work of art. \nSupporting the Princeton Battlefield\nFunds raised through the Mercer Oak Award reception support the continued preservation\, interpretation\, and public education efforts of the Princeton Battlefield Society as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of American independence. \n\nMercer Oak Award Reception\nJune 12\n@\n6:00 PM\n–\n8:30 PM\n\n\n\nAdd to calendar \n  \n\nGoogle Calendar\niCalendar\nOutlook The Trent House will host an exhibit and a game based on the theme “Trenton Eyewitness to Revolution.” The New Jersey State Museum will have informational materials for the museum’s programs and exhibits celebrating New Jersey’s and the United States’ 250th anniversary. They will also have an interactive button-making craft inspired by their brand-new exhibition\, “Spirit of ‘76: The Bicentennial.”\nIn 1902\, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames organized the Old Barracks Association and purchased the building. Trenton Barracks Founders Day will celebrate the unique history of one of the nation’s last freestanding colonial barracks while honoring the women who fought to preserve the site.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Washington Crossing Historic Park Book Club invites history enthusiasts to explore the American Revolution through engaging discussion and carefully selected readings. Led by the park’s Museum Curator\, Kimberly McCarty\, the club meets virtually via Zoom and focuses on books that shed new light on the Revolutionary era\, with special emphasis on the events surrounding the Delaware River crossing and the 1776 campaign. Free and open to all\, meetings typically take place on the third Monday of each month and provide an opportunity to connect with fellow readers while deepening your understanding of this pivotal period in American history. \nRunning from Bondage tells the compelling stories of enslaved women\, who comprised one-third of all runaways\, and the ways in which they fled or attempted to flee bondage during and after the Revolutionary War. Karen Cook Bell’s enlightening and original contribution to the study of slave resistance in eighteenth-century America explores the individual and collective lives of these women and girls of diverse circumstances\, while also providing details about what led them to escape. She demonstrates that there were in fact two wars being waged during the Revolutionary Era: a political revolution for independence from Great Britain and a social revolution for emancipation and equality in which Black women played an active role. Running from Bondage broadens and complicates how we study and teach this momentous event\, one that emphasizes the chances taken by these ‘Black founding mothers’ and the important contributions they made to the cause of liberty. \nRunning from Bondage:  Enslaved Women and their Remarkable Fight for Freedom in Revolutionary America by Karen Cook Bell \n\nJune 15 – Introduction – Chapter 2\nJuly 20- Chapters 3-4\nAugust 20 – Chapter 5- Appendix\n\n

SUMMARY:Thomas Jefferson Live
DESCRIPTION:John Stewart has been deeply interested in the life of Thomas Jefferson ever since he was a student at the University of Virginia. \nJohn has lectured on Jefferson’s life and influence in American History to schools\, civic groups and business audiences around Florida\, and up the east coast\, for over 30 years. Visit his website\, thomasjeffersonlive.com\, for more information. \nNow\, John portrays Jefferson in clothing\, language\, and ideas.  He will be speaking on “How a Lad from Rural Virginia Came to Write the Declaration of Independence”. He will go into some depth on Jefferson’s thinking and suitability for this watershed event in American history. An important part of his presentation takes the form of answering questions from the audience. You will be entertained by his convincing portrayal of Jefferson\, as well as benefited from his extensive knowledge of Jefferson’s life. \nJohn’s commitment to the preservation of the lessons and examples of historic early American personalities is complimented by his work as past President of the Palm Beach and St. Petersburg Chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution\, his work as state chair of the annual SAR Knight Essay Contest for high school students\, and over 160 appearances before audiences large and small\, and in classrooms\, which focused on teaching the facts about the American Revolution and Thomas Jefferson. Another notable contribution of his is a teaching video by Jefferson requested by the Florida Dept. of Education for statewide classroom enrichment purposes.
