DESCRIPTION:Join the WCPA Conservation Crew on a forest restoration project! \nWe will inspect and weed around the 600 native tree and shrub seedlings that we have planted along the historic Continental Lane Trail to ensure they continue to thrive. Then we will return later this year to plant 200 more! Meet us at Knox Grove inside the state park (turn right after entering and follow the signs). \nAges 16+. No experience necessary.  \nDress for the weather. Bring work gloves and loppers if you have them. We will provide extra gloves and tools. \nThe Lower Delaware Wild & Scenic Management Council\, as funded by the National Park Service\, (www.lowerdelawarewildandscenic.org) supports the Steele Run Restoration.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Family: The Biddles & American Independence
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Washington Crossing Park and Andalusia Historic House\, Gardens & Arboretum are excited to partner on a special program highlighting Andalusia’s upcoming exhibition\, Revolutionary Family: The Biddles & American Independence. \nAndalusia Historic House\, Gardens & Arboretum is a 50-acre site located on the Delaware River in Bensalem\, Pennsylvania. Andalusia was first established in 1795 by Philadelphia merchant John Craig\, and later expanded into a Greek Revival estate by his son-in-law Nicholas Biddle in the nineteenth century. Today\, Andalusia stewards the Biddle family’s history and legacy through tours of its historic house museum and access to its spectacular gardens. \nTimed to coincide with the nation’s semiquincentennial\, “Revolutionary Family: The Biddles & American Independence” presents historic objects\, artwork\, and manuscripts to explore the influential roles that Biddle family members played during the Revolution\, as well as wartime activities near the pre-Andalusia site. The exhibition\, on display in Andalusia’s second-floor exhibition gallery\, will run from March 30 through November 13\, 2026. Visit Andalusia’s website for more information on this upcoming exhibit. \nAndalusia has created four short-format documentary videos that feature a variety of guest experts and Andalusia’s Executive Director John Vick and Research Assistant Brie Stoltzfus to illuminate the experiences of nine Revolutionary-era Biddle family members. Each video explores these family members’ stories of bravery\, loss\, ingenuity\, love\, and friendship during the Revolution: Mary Scull Biddle\, matriarch and map editor and her son John Biddle\, surveyor and exiled loyalist; Colonel Clement and Rebekah Biddle\, a devoted couple at camp; Captains Nicholas and Charles Biddle\, brothers at sea; and Edward\, James\, and Owen Biddle\, leaders of Revolutionary thought and action. \nA screening of these videos will take place at Washington Crossing Historic Park on May 14. SUMMARY:Lecture – “The Writing of the Declaration and What It Meant in 1776″
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Washington Crossing Park (FWCP) has been awarded a $15\,000 grant through America250PA’s Lecture250 Series to support their upcoming presentation\, “The Writing of the Declaration and What It Meant in 1776”. The funding will help Washington Crossing Historic Park offer this signature lecture and support the other free public lectures presented at the park throughout the year\, exploring the people\, ideas\, and events that shaped our Commonwealth and the nation. \nDr. Emily Sneff’s new book\, When the Declaration of Independence Was News\, examines how the Declaration was disseminated\, interpreted\, and remembered in Pennsylvania and across the Atlantic world in 1776. Sneff\, a consulting curator for national exhibitions commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, holds a Ph.D. in History from William & Mary and will be on a national book tour in advance of the 2026 anniversary. \nRather than viewing the Declaration through the lens of hindsight\, this program examines the document at the moment of its creation in 1776\, when its legacy was uncertain and the outcome of the war against Great Britain remained unknown. Dr. Sneff explores how the Declaration was printed\, translated\, and circulated across the emerging nation and throughout the Atlantic world\, highlighting the many individuals involved in declaring independence\, from printers and soldiers to diplomats and translators. The lecture will also consider the Declaration’s enduring relevance in civic life today. \nFollowing the talk\, a living history component featuring historical reenactors will complement the program with interactive interpretation and a moderated audience Q&A. \nAttendees will receive a complimentary commemorative America250 pin and will have the opportunity to meet the author. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. \n\nThis free lecture is made possible by our General Level Supporter\, America250PA\, through the Lecture250 Grant Program.

This special event invites visitors to explore how wheat and wool were essential parts of daily life in early America through interactive demonstrations\, historic tours\, and engaging activities for all ages. \nThroughout the day\, enjoy traditional hand shearing demonstrations\, tour the historic grist mill\, and learn how raw materials like fleece and grain were transformed into everyday necessities during the colonial period. \nVisitors will also have the opportunity to tour the Thompson-Neely House\, recently renovated with a new exhibit unveiled in 2025\, for the 250th anniversary\, making this a perfect time to come back for a visit. \nSheep Shearing Demonstrations\nSheep-shearing demonstrations will take place hourly beginning at 10 AM. Visitors can observe traditional hand-shearing techniques\, learn about historic farming practices\, and meet the Thompson-Neely sheep. Throughout the day\, you’ll have the chance to meet the members of our historic flock. Each sheep has its own personality and plays a part in bringing history to life at the Thompson-Neely Farmstead. Her engaging solo performance explores Martha’s early life\, her first marriage and children\, her meeting and marriage to George Washington\, and the trials and triumphs they endured during the Revolutionary War. Audiences gain insight into what it was like to be part of the nation’s first “First Couple\,” as well as reflections on their lives together. \nThis event is pay-what-you-wish. Guests spend the day retracing the December 25 crossing of the Delaware and the December 26\, 1776 through January 3\, 1777 American and British military engagements at Trenton\, Princeton and areas in-between. \nHistorical interpreters Roger Williams and Larry Kidder will tell the remarkable story of these ten days that breathed crucial new life into the apparently expiring American Revolution. The events are discussed in the context of the local\, strategically important central New Jersey towns\, villages\, and farms. These locales were occupied by people of diverse backgrounds; with varying religious practices such as Quaker\, Presbyterian\, and Anglican; and with complex views on loyalty to the Revolution or the King. \nHear how the terrain\, weaponry and weather influenced the ways the battles were fought and how the lives of the local people were disrupted by them. See where armies marched\, fought and struggled to survive on an otherwise peaceful landscape\, while the course of human history hung in the balance. \nThe next public bus tours will be offered on December 13th and December 26th\, 2025 and January 3rd and January 16th 2026. See where armies marched\, fought and struggled to survive on an otherwise peaceful landscape\, while the course of human history hung in the balance. \nThe next public bus tours will be offered on December 13th and December 26th\, 2025 and January 3rd and January 16th 2026. SUMMARY:4th Annual "Washington's Landing in New Jersey"
DESCRIPTION:On December 14\, from 11 am to 3:30 pm\, please join NJ State Park historians\, the Washington Crossing Park Association\, the First Rhode Island Regiment\, and other NJ-based reenactor groups who will give the public an opportunity to experience both the Crossing and the March to Trenton through the eyes of the men and women who lived it. \nThe title of this event is “Washington’s Landing in New Jersey\,” which occurs on the same day as the Pennsylvania Park’s rehearsal crossing of the Delaware. Reenactors who cross with Washington will be met by our General Nathaneal Greene\, who will invite them to an encampment in the Lower Park. Near the encampment will be a Haybale Theater where historians will speak on the contributions of New Jersey soldiers and families. Visitors will also be welcomed at the nearby Nelson House\, where volunteers from the Garden Club of Trenton will serve free hot cider and donuts in front of a roaring fire. A food truck will be on hand! Free to enter\, but a $10/carload donation is requested.

DESCRIPTION:General George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River invokes memories of the Continental Army struggling for its survival through the harsh winter weather\, poor shelter\, and scant clothing. Come join us on Saturday\, December 13\, 2025 as our living historians take you back in time to experience the reality of the encampment at the Thompson-Neely farm on which several regiments of the Continental army were quartered. This immersive experience will put you in the midst of what daily life was like for the soldiers\, how they lived\, what they ate\, and most importantly how they survived the conditions before they crossed the Delaware River and went on to win at Trenton. Visitors will go through a series of vignettes\, each designed to illuminate a different aspect of life for soldiers and civilians. Dive into history on the ground where it actually happened. Come away with a newfound appreciation for this story of survival\, not just one of the people\, but of the nascent nation.
