DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, April 18\, 2026\, from 10 AM to 4 PM as we welcome spring at Washington Crossing Historic Park with a day of hands-on history and family fun at the Thompson-Neely Farmstead. This special event invites visitors to explore how wheat and wool were essential parts of daily life in early America through interactive demonstrations\, historic tours\, and engaging activities for all ages. \nThroughout the day\, enjoy traditional hand shearing demonstrations\, tour the historic grist mill\, and learn how raw materials like fleece and grain were transformed into everyday necessities during the colonial period. \nVisitors will also have the opportunity to tour the Thompson-Neely House\, recently renovated with a new exhibit unveiled in 2025\, for the 250th anniversary\, making this a perfect time to come back for a visit. \nSheep Shearing Demonstrations\nSheep-shearing demonstrations will take place hourly beginning at 10 AM. Visitors can observe traditional hand-shearing techniques\, learn about historic farming practices\, and meet the Thompson-Neely sheep. Full Shearing Schedule:  \n\n\n\n10:00 – Alex\n11:00 – Inky\n12:00 – Hannah\n1:00 – Robert\n2:00 – Nathanael\n3:00 – Rusty\n\n\n\nHistoric Grist Mill Tours\nTours of the Thompson-Neely Grist Mill will be offered on the half hour from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Visitors will learn how water-powered mills worked\, why they were essential to 18th-century life\, and how this particular mill supported the Thompson-Neely farm and helped provide food for Washington’s army during the December 1776 encampment. \nMeet The Flock\nMeet the sheep who make Wheat & Sheep Day so special! Throughout the day\, you’ll have the chance to meet the members of our historic flock. Each sheep has its own personality and plays a part in bringing history to life at the Thompson-Neely Farmstead. If you feel a connection to one of our wooly residents\, you’re welcome to sponsor a sheep and help support their ongoing care. In 2025\, volunteers contributed over 9\,700 hours! \nThe program will begin at 10:00 AM with a general orientation and Q&A in the auditorium. DESCRIPTION:Join park staff on a 2-mile hike along the park’s Continental Lane trail. This hike will follow one of the supposed paths of Washington and his troops after disembarking from the banks of the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776. Please meet in the parking lot at the front entrance to the park by 10 a.m. to meet the group. Enjoy the natural aspect of the trail as well as hear the history of Washington’s historic crossing. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear. Bring binoculars or a camera if you have them. Binoculars are available on a first come\, first serve basis. All ages welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Alisa Dupuy has been portraying Martha Dandridge Custis Washington as she was during the American Revolution since 2009 and has performed for hundreds of audiences nationwide. Her engaging solo performance explores Martha’s early life\, her first marriage and children\, her meeting and marriage to George Washington\, and the trials and triumphs they endured during the Revolutionary War. Audiences gain insight into what it was like to be part of the nation’s first “First Couple\,” as well as reflections on their lives together. \nThis event is pay-what-you-wish. Similar living-history and museum programs typically carry a $10 per person admission\, and guests are invited to contribute at a level that feels meaningful to them in support of the park’s 250th anniversary programming. \nThe program is sponsored by three local DAR chapters: \nBucks County Chapter\, Doylestown\, PA \nMargaret Gale Thornton Chapter\, Pipersville\, PA \nWashington Crossing Chapter\, Yardley / Newtown\, PA \n  \nOrganized by the DAR in support of the park’s 250th initiatives\, all proceeds directly benefit the Friends of Washington Crossing Park. \nEvent registration is required for all participants.

Free and open to all\, meetings typically take place on the third Monday of each month but may be moved depending on other events or the Park curator’s requirements\, and provide an opportunity to connect with fellow readers while deepening your understanding of this pivotal period in American history.\n\nKick off 2026 with the Washington Crossing Historic Park Book Club as we read and discuss Michael D. Hattem’s The Memory of ’76. This thought-provoking work examines how Americans have remembered and interpreted the Revolution over time\, challenging familiar narratives and encouraging fresh perspectives. During this virtual Zoom meeting\, participants will discuss the Introduction – Chapter 5 with guidance from the park’s curator and fellow readers. This hike will follow one of the supposed paths of Washington and his troops after disembarking from the banks of the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776. Enjoy the natural aspect of the trail as well as hear the history of Washington’s historic crossing. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear. Bring binoculars or a camera if you have them. Binoculars are available on a first come\, first serve basis. This is a free program. All ages welcome.

DESCRIPTION:On December 14\, from 11 am to 3:30 pm\, please join NJ State Park historians\, the Washington Crossing Park Association\, the First Rhode Island Regiment\, and other NJ-based reenactor groups who will give the public an opportunity to experience both the Crossing and the March to Trenton through the eyes of the men and women who lived it. \nThe title of this event is “Washington’s Landing in New Jersey\,” which occurs on the same day as the Pennsylvania Park’s rehearsal crossing of the Delaware. Reenactors who cross with Washington will be met by our General Nathaneal Greene\, who will invite them to an encampment in the Lower Park. Near the encampment will be a Haybale Theater where historians will speak on the contributions of New Jersey soldiers and families. Visitors will also be welcomed at the nearby Nelson House\, where volunteers from the Garden Club of Trenton will serve free hot cider and donuts in front of a roaring fire. A food truck will be on hand! Free to enter\, but a $10/carload donation is requested.

DESCRIPTION:General George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River invokes memories of the Continental Army struggling for its survival through the harsh winter weather\, poor shelter\, and scant clothing. Come join us on Saturday\, December 13\, 2025 as our living historians take you back in time to experience the reality of the encampment at the Thompson-Neely farm on which several regiments of the Continental army were quartered. This immersive experience will put you in the midst of what daily life was like for the soldiers\, how they lived\, what they ate\, and most importantly how they survived the conditions before they crossed the Delaware River and went on to win at Trenton. Visitors will go through a series of vignettes\, each designed to illuminate a different aspect of life for soldiers and civilians. Dive into history on the ground where it actually happened. Come away with a newfound appreciation for this story of survival\, not just one of the people\, but of the nascent nation. SUMMARY:Captain Daniel Bray
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Bray was first a Scottish farmer from Baptisttown\, NJ who became an experienced Waterman on the Delaware River\, rising to Captain of his own Durham boat in 1769 at age 19. Later he joined the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon County NJ Militia\, rising to captain in 1775. He earned his position in history when General George Washington charged him with obtaining the boats needed to cross the Delaware River on Christmas Night in 1776. Later he was promoted to general of the militia\, and fought in the War of 1812. \nEnjoy a first-person interpretation about Daniel Bray — from his boyhood as a farmer\, to building Durham boats \,to becoming a waterman on the river\, to marriage\, to getting the boats for George Washington —  then back to farming and finally the War of 1812. There is some audience participation\, two costume changes\, and a short play. The talk is supported by slides\, a River Shanty\, and a recited ballad.    \nThe narrator Daniel Nurmi McAuliffe has been a reenactor for 32 years with the 5th PA Regiment\, crossing the Delaware numerous times. In 2016 he was asked to portray Captain Daniel Bray to replace his deceased mentor\, Dick Bray\, a direct descendant. \nCome hear how this Scotsman learned how to “Git On Wit It!” in his life.

This special event celebrates that connection and offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from the filmmakers and interpreters whose work keeps this history vibrant. \nThis program is presented by Friends of Washington Crossing Park in partnership with the Princeton Battlefield Society as part of the Princeton Battlefield Society’s Cadwalader Lecture Series. \nWhat to Expect\n\n\n\nGuests will enjoy a 45-minute curated clip reel from The American Revolution introduced by Director\, Sarah Botstein\, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Jennifer Martin\, Executive Director of Friends of Washington Crossing Park.\nTogether the panelists will explore how reenactors serve as storytellers who bring history to life and how documentary filmmakers\, living-history interpreters\, and reenactors collaborate to fill in the gaps left by the limited material culture of the 18th century.\nThe evening concludes with an open audience Q&A session for a chance to engage directly with the panelists.\n\n\n\nMeet the Panelists\nSarah Botstein – Director & Producer\nSarah Botstein is one of the leading documentary producers of her generation\, responsible for some of the most acclaimed and widely viewed public television programs of the past two decades. She has produced landmark series with Ken Burns and Lynn Novick\, including Jazz (2001)\, The War (2007)\, Prohibition (2011)\, The Vietnam War (2017)\, College Behind Bars (2019)\, and Hemingway (2020). The U.S. and the Holocaust marked her debut as a co-director\, premiering in September 2022 to widespread critical acclaim for its powerful portrayal of how Americans grappled with one of the greatest humanitarian tragedies in history. \nIn addition to her television work\, Botstein is an original contributor to Ken Burns UNUM\, a web-based platform highlighting historical themes across the Florentine Films library and collaborates with PBS LearningMedia and WETA-TV to develop educational content for the Ken Burns Classroom. She has been a featured speaker at film festivals\, universities\, and public history forums across the country\, sharing insights on the art and ethics of documentary storytelling. Currently\, Botstein is producing an epic six-part series on the American Revolution — portions of which were filmed at Washington Crossing Historic Park — and a three-part series about the life and presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson\, continuing her commitment to creating deeply researched\, visually compelling films that illuminate America’s past for new generations.\n\n  \nMegan Ruffe – Co-Producer\nOriginally from Bucks County\, Megan Ruffe has been at Florentine Films since 2013 and is co-producing the upcoming series on the American Revolution. She began as an apprentice editor and production associate on The Vietnam War (2017)\, later serving as post-production supervisor on College Behind Bars (2019) and contributing to Hemingway (2021) and Benjamin Franklin (2022). She also produced UNUM Shorts\, a web series featured in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and on CBS Sunday Morning. In 2007\, he was honored with the International Documentary Association’s Outstanding Documentary Cinematography Award (career achievement)\, and his work is regularly featured at the Sundance\, Telluride\, and Tribeca Film Festivals. He is best known for his work on The National Parks\, The War\, Jazz\, The Civil War\, New York\, Baseball\, Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery\, Stonewall Uprising\, Soundtrack for a Revolution\, and many more. His producing credits include Statue of Liberty (Oscar nomination with Ken Burns) and Coney Island (Sundance Film Festival). He is the director of Listening to Children (Emmy nomination) and the co-director of Fast Eddie\, Seeking Justice\, People’s Poetry\, and War Files. \n  \nJames McKane – Design Examiner & Living History Interpreter & Commander\nJames McKane works full-time as a Design Examiner for the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is a nationally recognized living-history interpreter and artisan\, serving on the Board of Directors for the Brigade of the American Revolution\, where he also holds the role of Chief Safety and Authenticity Inspector. James commands the Third New Jersey Regiment\, the “Jersey Grays\,” Capt. Bloomfield’s Company and has been active in Revolutionary War reenactment since 2013. \nThrough his business reproducing 18th-century clothing and equipment\, McKane has produced more than 200 hand-sewn regimental coats\, hundreds of cartridge boxes and knapsacks\, and supplied museums and historical organizations across North and South America\, Europe\, Asia\, and Australia.
