SUMMARY:Captain Daniel Bray
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Bray was first a Scottish farmer from Baptisttown\, NJ who became an experienced Waterman on the Delaware River\, rising to Captain of his own Durham boat in 1769 at age 19. Later he joined the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon County NJ Militia\, rising to captain in 1775. He earned his position in history when General George Washington charged him with obtaining the boats needed to cross the Delaware River on Christmas Night in 1776. Later he was promoted to general of the militia\, and fought in the War of 1812. \nEnjoy a first-person interpretation about Daniel Bray — from his boyhood as a farmer\, to building Durham boats \,to becoming a waterman on the river\, to marriage\, to getting the boats for George Washington —  then back to farming and finally the War of 1812. There is some audience participation\, two costume changes\, and a short play. The talk is supported by slides\, a River Shanty\, and a recited ballad.    \nThe narrator Daniel Nurmi McAuliffe has been a reenactor for 32 years with the 5th PA Regiment\, crossing the Delaware numerous times. In 2016 he was asked to portray Captain Daniel Bray to replace his deceased mentor\, Dick Bray\, a direct descendant. \nCome hear how this Scotsman learned how to “Git On Wit It!” in his life.

She has produced landmark series with Ken Burns and Lynn Novick\, including Jazz (2001)\, The War (2007)\, Prohibition (2011)\, The Vietnam War (2017)\, College Behind Bars (2019)\, and Hemingway (2020). She began as an apprentice editor and production associate on The Vietnam War (2017)\, later serving as post-production supervisor on College Behind Bars (2019) and contributing to Hemingway (2021) and Benjamin Franklin (2022). He is a nationally recognized living-history interpreter and artisan\, serving on the Board of Directors for the Brigade of the American Revolution\, where he also holds the role of Chief Safety and Authenticity Inspector. James commands the Third New Jersey Regiment\, the “Jersey Grays\,” Capt. In our region\, the Delaware River is used by many migrating birds in order to travel north or south during fall and spring.  \nThis outing will meet in the Washington’s Grove parking lot on River Drive in Titusville\, NJ\, next to the Washington Crossing Bridge. He’ll also discuss the Nature Center itself\, currently under renovation\, and it will offer to local residents. \nThis year\, immerse yourself in the natural world with outings focused on local ecology\, the magnificent journey of migratory birds\, the vital work of pollinators\, the fantastic world of fungi\, and the impressive spectacle of birds of prey! \nLooking ahead to 2026\, we’ll delve into the park’s rich history with special programming tied to Washington’s crossing of the Delaware. \nJoe will also discuss how you can get involved through new volunteer opportunities\, conservation management\, and other impactful projects that will shape the park’s future. \nAbout Joe: Growing up in South Jersey near a steady stream\, Naturalist Joe Moore developed a strong curiosity about the natural and cultural world. With a lifelong love for history and supportive parents\, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Rowan University in 2014. A year later\, Joe enrolled in American Public University’s Environmental Management program\, completing his Master of Science degree in 2017. Blending his interests in history and nature\, Joe went on to work at several non-profits focused on conservation and preserving coastal heritage along the Jersey Shore through eco-tourism. Shortly after the Crown’s forces took New York City\, much of it mysteriously burned to the ground. \nThis is the first book to fully explore the Great Fire of 1776 and why its origins remained a mystery even after the British investigated it in 1776 and 1783. SUMMARY:Washington Crossing State Park: Natural History & Design Webinar (with the Pennington Library)
DESCRIPTION:Washington Crossing State Park has changed in almost unimaginable  ways over the last 100 years. From farm fields to gardens to plantations  to old fields\, shaped by deer\, disease\, and invasive species\, the park  represents a fluid and ever-changing landscape. Every aspect of the park  has\, whether directly or indirectly\, been shaped  by human-driven forces. Using Peter Osborne’s book\, Where Washington Once Led\,  this talk aims to uncover some of these forces to reveal how the park  has evolved\, enabling participants to read the landscape through  natural signs and artifacts. \nHuman landscapes cannot go “natural” on their own. We have the  opportunity to restore this landscape\, either along the lines of  original designs such as with the George Washington Memorial Arboretum\,  which opened in 1932 and displayed native New Jersey shrubs and trees\,  or in the form of ecological restoration\, aiming to return  the human-dependent landscape back to nature. DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us the 4th Friday of each month from 11:00am – 3:00pm\, this May to September to learn about life on the Thompson-Neely Farmstead. In the 18th Century much of Bucks County was cultivated farmland\, with a wide variety of activities required to keep them running. From Animal care\, to structure maintenance\, to harvesting and preserving\, each of these programs at the Thompson-Neely Farmstead will cover a different set of tasks that would be performed on the farm\, so that you can see and experience what life was like for many people in the years surrounding the Revolution \nFor September our demonstrators will show how the harvest was preserved for use in the winter months\, through drying\, pickling salting\, etc. This was an important activity to ensure a steady food supply even after the growing season ended for the winter.

DESCRIPTION:The Washington Crossing Historic Park Book Club\, run in partnership between the Park curator and the Friends of Washington Crossing Park\, is a monthly\, free book club where members read a selection of books relating to the history of the Ten Crucial Days and the Revolution at large and discuss together via zoom. \nBeginning in August\, Museum Curator Kimberly McCarty will lead a discussion of the book club’s next selection: The Tragedy of Benedict Arnold: An American Life by Joyce Lee Malcolm. Book club meetings are free and open to all. DESCRIPTION:Join us each month as historical interpreters and reenactors bring a piece of history to life at Washington Crossing Historic Park. Each month’s program will run from 11-3\, and will cover various aspects on military life during the American Revolution. The programs will take place on the 2nd Saturday of each month April – September. There is no admission or registration\, all you have to do is show up and be ready to learn something new! \n  \nSeptember’s program will feature Supplies! The Continental army was infamously short of supplies of all sorts\, food\, ammunition\, weapons\, etc. Learn about how various normally civilian trades and industries re-oriented themselves to supply the army during the war and see demonstrations of those trades in action.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “Environmental Legacies: How the War of Independence Affected the Natural World in Predictable and Surprising Ways”
DESCRIPTION:Join Juniata College Professor Dave Hsiung for his presentation of how the revolutionary war impacted the natural world. Dr. David Hsiung is the Dr. Charles R. and Shirley A. Knox Professor of History at Juniata College\, where he has taught since earning his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and his B.A. from Yale. A dedicated teacher and scholar\, he has received multiple honors for excellence in the classroom\, including Juniata’s Beachley Award for Distinguished Teaching and Pennsylvania’s “Professor of the Year” from the Carnegie Foundation. His research spans Appalachian history\, environmental perspectives on the American Revolution\, and interdisciplinary collaborations with students that bring history to life through hands-on experimentation and exploration. \nThe War of Independence affected the natural world in important and lasting ways. The lecture will examine deforestation at Valley Forge; raids that seized animals but also produced some surprisingly “positive” effects; and lead musket balls left on battlefields that may only now be poisoning the land. This talk offers not only new ways to think about the Revolution\, but also war and the environment today. \n\n\n\nRegister Here!

DESCRIPTION:Join the Washington Crossing Park Association (WCPA) Conservation Crew for a forest restoration project along the historic Continental Lane trail. Participants will briefly learn about how invasive species are impacting New Jersey’s forests. Then we’ll get to work removing invasive plants to support the restoration of this important ecosystem! \n📍 Location: Meet us at the small parking lot on the left\, just past the State Park’s main entrance. \nNo experience necessary. Dress for the weather. Bring work gloves and loppers or a shovel if you have them. We will provide extra gloves and tools.

DESCRIPTION:Park Seasonal Historian Julie Power will discuss the conditions and stories of the soldiers  who were held on the prison ships in Wallabout Bay\, Long Island\,  NY. Due to a combination of neglect\, poor conditions on the ships and disease\, more than 11\,500 American prisoners of war  died in captivity aboard  these British prison ships — more than in all the engagements of the American Revolutionary War combined.
