Hattem as he discusses his book The Memory of ’76:  The Revolution in American History. \nAmericans agree that their nation’s origins lie in the Revolution\, but they have never agreed on what the Revolution meant. For nearly two hundred and fifty years\, politicians\, political parties\, social movements\, and a diverse array of ordinary Americans have constantly reimagined the Revolution to fit the times and suit their own agendas. \nIn this sweeping take on American history\, Michael D. Hattem reveals how conflicts over the meaning and legacy of the Revolution—including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution—have influenced the most important events and tumultuous periods in the nation’s history; how African Americans\, women\, and other oppressed groups have shaped the popular memory of the Revolution; and how much of our contemporary memory of the Revolution is a product of the Cold War. \nBy exploring the Revolution’s unique role in American history as a national origin myth\, Hattem shows how the meaning of the Revolution has never been fixed\, how remembering the nation’s founding has often done far more to divide Americans than to unite them\, and how revising the past is an important and long‑standing American political tradition.

Registration required.  Log-in information provided at registration. \nJoin historian Brady Crytzer as he discusses his book The Whiskey Rebellion:  A Distilled History of an American Crisis. \nIn March 1791 Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton shocked the western frontier when he proposed a tax on whiskey to balance America’s national debt. The law\, known  as the “Whiskey Act\,” disproportionately penalized farmers in the backcountry\, while offering favorable tax incentives designed to protect larger distillers. Settlers in Western Pennsylvania bristled at its passage and demanded that the law be revoked or rewritten to correct its perceived injustices.  As the months passed people  grew restless with the inadequacy of the government’s response and they soon turned to more violent means of political expression.   In response President George Washington raised one of the largest forces he ever commanded to suppress the rebellion. No major battle ever occurred\, but weeks of arrests\, illegal detentions\, and civil rights violations rocked the west. The event polarized the nation.

Visitors may attend virtually on Zoom.  Registration is required.  Log-in information provided at registration. \nIn recognition of the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1824 tour of America James Taub\, Associate Curator at the Museum of the American Revolution\, will examine how French service in the colonies  influenced the future of the empire. \nWe often talk of the French Military during the American Revolutionary War through the lens of Rochambeau and his troops. However\, the service of his ‘Expédition particulière’ was a drop in the bucket of the experience of French arms during the years following the Seven Years War. By following personalities such as Rochambeau\, Broglie\, Montcalm\, Bougainville\, and Lafayette\, we can discover how the French military had their own revolution from the 1760s to 1780s\, and how the groundwork of the successes of the French Revolution and First Empire were laid by men who witnessed war in America. \nRegister here.

Warren Jr.’s new book on the American Revolution. \nPublished under the auspices of the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati\, Freedom: The Enduring Importance of the American Revolution is a narrative history of the War for Independence. It tells the pivotal story of the courageous men and women who risked their lives to create a new nation based on the idea that government should serve people and protect their freedom. Written for Americans intent on understanding our national origins but also appropriate for teachers and secondary classrooms\, Freedom argues that the American Revolution is the central event in our history: the turning point between our colonial origins and our national experience. This volume includes 167 full-color paintings\, maps\, illustrations\, and photos—many seen only in historical institutions nationwide! \nThe narrative in FREEDOM spans from the American Revolution’s origins in the nature of colonial British America—a society in which freedom was limited and in which everyone was the subject of a distant monarch—through the crisis in the British Empire that followed the French and Indian War\, to the events of the War for Independence itself\, and ultimately to the creation of the first great republic in modern history. Ours is a shared\, inspiring story of how Americans\, united in their fight for freedom\, became one nation with a shared history and national identity. It is a testament to the power of unity and shared values. DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid event.  Visitors may attend in-person in the Visitor Center Auditorium or virtually on Zoom.  In the event of inclement weather\, this will be a virtual-only event.  Registrants will be notified.  Registration is required.  Log-in information provided at registration. \nJoin historian Don Hagist as he discusses his book The Revolution’s Last Men:  The Soldiers Behind the Photographs.  During the Civil War came the realization that only a handful of veterans of the American Revolution still survived.  Six of these men were photographed and interviewed for a book by Reverend E. B. Hillard that appeared late in 1864. Their images have captivated generations since then; but—through a combination of faded memories and the interviewer’s patriotic agenda—the biographies accompanying these amazing photographs were garbled and distorted\, containing information that ranged from inaccurate to implausible. Now for the first time the military careers of these men have been researched in detail using a wide range of primary sources. The Revolution’s Last Men presents the original biographical interviews published in 1864\, pension depositions and other first-hand accounts given by each man later in life\, and an up-to-date biography examining each soldier’s service and discussing the inaccuracies and uncertainties of the previously published accounts. \nRegister here.

Brown as she discusses her book Foul Bodies: Cleanliness in America\, winner of the Organization of American Historians’ Lawrence Levine Book Prize for cultural history and the Society of the History of the Early American Republic Book Prize. Foul Bodies explores early America’s evolving perceptions of cleanliness\, along the way analyzing the connections between changing public expectations for appearance and manners\, and the backstage work of grooming\, laundering\, and housecleaning performed by women. Brown provides an intimate view of cleanliness practices and how such forces as urbanization\, immigration\, market conditions\, and concerns about social mobility influenced them. Broad in historical scope and imaginative in its insights\, this book expands the topic of cleanliness to encompass much larger issues\, including religion\, health\, gender\, class\, and race relations. \nRegistration is required.  Log-in information will be provided at registration.

DESCRIPTION:The desperate condition of the soldiers who crossed the Delaware River on December 25\, 1776 has become as legendary as the crossing itself. Less well-known are the conditions under which these soldiers lived in the weeks preceding the crossing. \nOn Sunday\, December 3 at 7 PM\, Park Military Historian Colin Zimmerman will examine the reality of the difficult and complex encampments and how they impacted what would prove to be a decisive military stroke in the American War for Independence. \nDue to the overwhelming response to attend\, we are switching entirely to livestream. We will showcase new research and interpretative frameworks particularly regarding the experiences of women\, African Americans\, Indigenous peoples\, and Loyalists in addition to new archaeological findings from this era. \nOur keynote speaker will be Dr. Ned Blackhawk (Western Shoshone)\, Howard R. Lamar Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University and author of The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History. \nIn the afternoon we will hold workshops focused on research and public history. Registration for these workshops is not required\, but requested so we can best prepare. \nWorkshop Options: \n\nTowards a More Complete History: Researching and Interpreting People of Color at the Old Barracks Museum: As we approach the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the Old Barracks Museum (OBM) is expanding our interpretation to include the stories of historically underrepresented people\, including soldiers of color (of African and Indigenous descent) serving in the Continental Army and those of African descent who helped build and maintain the Trenton barracks. OBM Curator Sarah Kirk will share our “Soldiers of Color” research project to identify soldiers of color who fought at both battles of Trenton in 1776 and 1777. OBM living history interpreters Kaila Ettiene-Best and Steven Thomas will share their experiences interpreting the stories of people of color.\nState Archives: Archivists at the New Jersey State Archives will share under-researched documents pertaining to the American Revolution. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 4 at 1:30 PM\, commemorate the Marine Corps birthday with Jason Q. Bohm (Maj. Gen. USMC) as he discusses his book on the founding and early years of the corps. \nThe story begins with the oppressive days that drove America into a conflict for which it was ill-prepared\, when thirteen independent colonies commenced a war against the world’s most powerful military with nothing more than local militias\, privateers\, and other ad hoc units. \nIt continues with the creation of the Continental Marines and the men who led them during the parallel paths followed by the Army and Marines in the war’s opening years and the early successes and failures at Lexington and Concord\, Bunker Hill\, Canada\, Boston\, Charleston\, and more. Click here to register. \nIn 1777\, Congress labeled Quakers who would not take up arms in support of the War of Independence as “the most Dangerous Enemies America knows” and ordered Pennsylvania and Delaware to apprehend them. In response\, Keystone State officials sent twenty men—seventeen of whom were Quakers—into exile\, banishing them to Virginia\, where they were held for a year. \nPrisoners of Congress: Philadelphia’s Quakers in Exile\, 1777-1778 (Penn State University Press\, 2023) reconstructs this moment in American history through the experiences of four families: the Drinkers\, the Fishers\, the Pembertons\, and the Gilpins. Identifying them as the new nation’s first political prisoners\, Norman E. Donoghue II relates how the Quakers\, once the preeminent power in Pennsylvania and an integral constituency of the colonies and early republic\, came to be reviled by patriots who saw refusal to fight the English as borderline sedition. \nSurprising\, vital\, and vividly told\, this narrative of political and literal warfare waged by the United States against a pacifist religious group during the Revolutionary War era sheds new light on an essential aspect of American history. It will appeal to anyone interested in learning more about the nation’s founding. \nDr. Patrick Spero\, the former Librarian & Director of the American Philosophical Society’s Library & Museum\, has written of Ned’s book that it “brings to life one of the most important and compelling events of the American Revolution in Philadelphia” and that it is “an untold story of national significance.” \nThe talk will be held in-person only. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 7 at 1:30 PM\, Washington Crossing Historic Park welcomes curators Annie Halliday and Clint Flack from the Mercer Museum to discuss the notorious Doan gang\, their background\, and activities early in the revolution. The Doan gang was a group of British loyalists\, the most notorious members being five brothers and one cousin from the Doan family of Plumstead. The gang was composed of around 30 members who were accused murderers\, attainted traitors\, horse thieves\, and ferried British prisoners of war to British lines. They were also guilty of robbing tax collectors\, their most famous crime being the theft of the Bucks County treasury in 1781. \nThis 45 minute lecture focuses on the Doan gang and their activities during the American Revolution. Events covered include the Loyalist raid of the Bird in the Hand and the Battle of Crooked Billet. This lecture is based entirely on contemporary records including court documents\, eyewitness accounts\, and newspaper appearances. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. In late December 1776\, the American War of Independence appeared to be on its last legs. Desperate times call for desperate measures\, however\, and George Washington responded to this crisis with astonishing audacity. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, November 9 from 7 to 8 PM at the Washington Crossing Historic Park Visitor Center for a lecture with Kevin J. Weddle on his book\, The Compleat Victory: Saratoga and the American Revolution. This book is the recipient of the 9th annual \, Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History which is bestowed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in recognition of the best book in the field of military history published in English during the previous calendar year. \nIn the late summer and fall of 1777\, after two years of indecisive fighting on both sides\, the outcome of the American War of Independence hung in the balance. Having successfully expelled the Americans from Canada in 1776\, the British were determined to end the rebellion and devised what they believed a war-winning strategy: sending General John Burgoyne south to rout the Americans and take Albany. When British forces captured Fort Ticonderoga on New York’s Lake Champlain with unexpected ease in July of 1777\, it looked as if it was a matter of time before they would break the rebellion in the North. Less than three and a half months later\, however\, a combination of the Continental Army and militia forces commanded by Major General Horatio Gates and inspired by the heroics of Benedict Arnold\, forced Burgoyne to surrender his entire army. The American victory at Saratoga—described by one general as “the Compleat“—stunned the world and changed the course of the war. In the end\, British plans were undone by a combination of distance\, geography\, logistics\, and an underestimation of American leadership and fighting ability. \nWeddle will discuss some of the key events and themes from this pivotal event in US history based on accounts detailed in his new book\, The Compleat Victory: Saratoga and the American Revolution (Oxford University Press\, 2021). The Chair of the judging committee for the Gilder Lehrman Military History Prize said this of the book: “The object of this prize has been to reward scholarly\, well-written\, accessible and ground-breaking military history\, and the judges had no hesitation in awarding this year’s award to Kevin Weddle’s masterly book. The judges were astonished at the way Weddle kept up the tension throughout\, despite everyone knowing the eventual outcome.” \nThe talk will be held in-person and will also be livestreamed. For these people\, the war was neither a glorious cause to be won nor an unnatural rebellion to be suppressed\, but a dangerous and costly calamity to be navigated with care. The scheme became known as the Gourd Patch or Lewellen Conspiracy. The men called themselves the Brethren. McConville’s The Brethren (Harvard University Press\, 2021) tells the dramatic story of ordinary people who came to fear that their Revolutionary leaders were trying to undermine religious freedom and individual liberty—the very causes now ascribed to the Founding generation. \nBrendan McConville has written several books on early American history\, including The King’s Three Faces: The Rise and Fall of Royal America\, 1688–1766. Professor of History at Boston University\, he is co-chair of the David Center for the Study of the American Revolution at the American Philosophical Society and cohost of the Boston-area radio program The Historians. \nThis event will be held in-person at the Washington Crossing Historic Park Visitors Center and is hosted by the David Center for the American Revolution at the American Philosophical Society. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 1 at 1:30 PM\, join author Steven Elliott as he discusses his book Surviving the Winters: Housing Washington’s Army During the American Revolution. \nWashington’s troops spent only a few days a year in combat. The rest of the time\, especially in the winter months\, they were engaged in a different sort of battle—against the elements\, unfriendly terrain\, disease\, and hunger. Victory in that more sustained struggle depended on a mastery of camp construction\, logistics\, and health and hygiene—the components that Elliott considers in his environmental\, administrative\, and operational investigation of the winter encampments at Middlebrook\, Morristown\, West Point\, New Windsor\, and Valley Forge. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, February 13 at 1:30 PM\, author William L. Kidder will discuss his new book The Revolutionary World of a Free Black Man: Jacob Francis 1754-1836. \nBorn in Amwell Township to a free Black mother\, Jacob Francis lived his 82-year life in a world of revolutionary change. He became caught up in the rising tide of revolution in the 1760s and 70s and served fourteen months in the 16th Continental Army regiment\, including at the Battle of Trenton\, and then in the Third Hunterdon County militia regiment for over six years. Establishing himself as a farmer\, he married an enslaved woman named Mary\, freed her and together they raised their nine children in the vicinity of Flemington during a period of rising interest in abolition. The story of Jacob Francis and his family provides an inside view of life in New Jersey in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and the revolutionary changes affecting the lives of both free and enslaved Black people. \nRegistration is required on the DCNR website. SUMMARY:A Revolutionary Conversation: Whose history and whose freedom\, anyway?
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear stories of African Americans living during the Revolutionary War — as continental soldiers\, loyalists\, slaves\, and citizens — and discuss how our community can interpret our shared history in ways that respect our shared ideals of equality. Students from Sprout U School of the Arts will present a “living museum” providing visitors an experiential interpretation of Revolutionary War history from an African-American perspective. By sharing stories not typically included in traditional Anglo history through dramatization\, our community will explore issues of equality and freedom and encourage conversation and dialogue. Interactive activities for children will encourage them to engage with the characters. We will be joined by author Gretchen Woelfle\, whose book “Answering the Cry for Freedom” provides the stories we will share.

We will have limited ability to assist on the day of the lecture. \nAbout the Speaker\nResident Manager of the historic Hale Byrnes House\, Kim Burdick is the founder of the American Revolution Round Table of Northern Delaware. She is a frequent contributor to the Journal of the American Revolution. Her book\, Revolutionary Delaware\, was awarded first place in the 2016 statewide writer’s competition held annually by the Delaware Press Association. Burdick is a past Chairman of the Delaware Humanities Council and a Delaware Advisor Emerita of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She currently serves as Executive Director of People to People Delaware. She holds an MA in American Folk Culture and Museum Studies from Cooperstown and an MPA in Agency Management from the University of Delaware.

DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled.\n \nJoin Washington Crossing Historic Park curator Kimberly McCarty for a free gallery tour of the Visitor Center exhibit\, Soldier Health in Revolutionary Pennsylvania.\nThe exhibit illustrates the greatest danger that soldiers faced during the Revolutionary War: disease. In the 18th century\, very little was known about preventing the spread of bacteria and infection\, which allowed diseases such as scabies\, dysentery\, small pox\, typhus and yellow fever to plague the troops. In fact\, 6\,000 of the 17\,000 soldiers in Pennsylvania in August 1776 were ill.\nIn the exhibit\, visitors can step into a sick room that recreates the spaces that soldiers recuperated in during the Continental Army’s 1776 encampment at the Thompson-Neely House.
