DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, May 24 at 7 PM\, author Brendan McConville will visit Washington Crossing Historic Park to discuss his book\, The Brethren: A Story of Faith and Conspiracy in Revolutionary America. \nLess than a year into the American Revolution\, a group of North Carolina farmers hatched a plot to assassinate the colony’s leading patriots\, including the governor. The scheme became known as the Gourd Patch or Lewellen Conspiracy. The men called themselves the Brethren. McConville’s The Brethren (Harvard University Press\, 2021) tells the dramatic story of ordinary people who came to fear that their Revolutionary leaders were trying to undermine religious freedom and individual liberty—the very causes now ascribed to the Founding generation. \nBrendan McConville has written several books on early American history\, including The King’s Three Faces: The Rise and Fall of Royal America\, 1688–1766. Professor of History at Boston University\, he is co-chair of the David Center for the Study of the American Revolution at the American Philosophical Society and cohost of the Boston-area radio program The Historians. \nThis event will be held in-person at the Washington Crossing Historic Park Visitors Center and is hosted by the David Center for the American Revolution at the American Philosophical Society. It will describe some of the duties women performed and how they were compensated for them once they were “on the rolls”. How has popular culture portrayed women in this situation\, and how have those portrayals stood up to what the records reflect? DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 1 at 1:30 PM\, join author Steven Elliott as he discusses his book Surviving the Winters: Housing Washington’s Army During the American Revolution. \nWashington’s troops spent only a few days a year in combat. The rest of the time\, especially in the winter months\, they were engaged in a different sort of battle—against the elements\, unfriendly terrain\, disease\, and hunger. Victory in that more sustained struggle depended on a mastery of camp construction\, logistics\, and health and hygiene—the components that Elliott considers in his environmental\, administrative\, and operational investigation of the winter encampments at Middlebrook\, Morristown\, West Point\, New Windsor\, and Valley Forge. Documenting the growth of Washington and his subordinates as military administrators\, Surviving the Winters offers a telling new perspective on the commander’s generalship during the Revolutionary War. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, February 13 at 1:30 PM\, author William L. Kidder will discuss his new book The Revolutionary World of a Free Black Man: Jacob Francis 1754-1836. \nBorn in Amwell Township to a free Black mother\, Jacob Francis lived his 82-year life in a world of revolutionary change. He became caught up in the rising tide of revolution in the 1760s and 70s and served fourteen months in the 16th Continental Army regiment\, including at the Battle of Trenton\, and then in the Third Hunterdon County militia regiment for over six years. Establishing himself as a farmer\, he married an enslaved woman named Mary\, freed her and together they raised their nine children in the vicinity of Flemington during a period of rising interest in abolition. The story of Jacob Francis and his family provides an inside view of life in New Jersey in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and the revolutionary changes affecting the lives of both free and enslaved Black people. \nRegistration is required on the DCNR website. SUMMARY:A Revolutionary Conversation: Whose history and whose freedom\, anyway?
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear stories of African Americans living during the Revolutionary War — as continental soldiers\, loyalists\, slaves\, and citizens — and discuss how our community can interpret our shared history in ways that respect our shared ideals of equality. Students from Sprout U School of the Arts will present a “living museum” providing visitors an experiential interpretation of Revolutionary War history from an African-American perspective. By sharing stories not typically included in traditional Anglo history through dramatization\, our community will explore issues of equality and freedom and encourage conversation and dialogue. Interactive activities for children will encourage them to engage with the characters. We will be joined by author Gretchen Woelfle\, whose book “Answering the Cry for Freedom” provides the stories we will share.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 12 at 1:30 PM\, prominent Delaware historian Kim Burdick will discuss her research on fever and sickness in the Continental Army. \nDuring their December 1776 encampment in Bucks County\, the beleaguered Continental Army was beset with illness and many soldiers were unfit for duty. We will have limited ability to assist on the day of the lecture. \nAbout the Speaker\nResident Manager of the historic Hale Byrnes House\, Kim Burdick is the founder of the American Revolution Round Table of Northern Delaware. She is a frequent contributor to the Journal of the American Revolution. Her book\, Revolutionary Delaware\, was awarded first place in the 2016 statewide writer’s competition held annually by the Delaware Press Association. Burdick is a past Chairman of the Delaware Humanities Council and a Delaware Advisor Emerita of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She currently serves as Executive Director of People to People Delaware. She holds an MA in American Folk Culture and Museum Studies from Cooperstown and an MPA in Agency Management from the University of Delaware.

DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled.\n \nJoin Washington Crossing Historic Park curator Kimberly McCarty for a free gallery tour of the Visitor Center exhibit\, Soldier Health in Revolutionary Pennsylvania.\nThe exhibit illustrates the greatest danger that soldiers faced during the Revolutionary War: disease. In the 18th century\, very little was known about preventing the spread of bacteria and infection\, which allowed diseases such as scabies\, dysentery\, small pox\, typhus and yellow fever to plague the troops. In fact\, 6\,000 of the 17\,000 soldiers in Pennsylvania in August 1776 were ill.\nIn the exhibit\, visitors can step into a sick room that recreates the spaces that soldiers recuperated in during the Continental Army’s 1776 encampment at the Thompson-Neely House.

Stewart\, will be our featured speaker at our February 21 Washington Birthday Educational Forum at the Mercer County Community College’s Conference Center.  The program will start at 6:30 pm and will end with a birthday cake and a “Happy Birthday to You” to George Washington. (Information and details will appear on this website as details are confirmed.) \nAfter many years as a trial and appellate lawyer\, Mr. Stewart became a bestselling writer of history and historical fiction.  His histories have explored the writing of the Constitution\, the gifts of James Madison\, the outrageous western expedition and treason trial of the mysterious Aaron Burr\, and the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson.  He is now working on an examination of George Washington’s political mastery\, which should be published in early 2021.  His histories have won the Washington Writing Award for best book of the year\, the History Prize of the Society of the Cincinnati\, and the William H. Prescott Award of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. \nMr. Stewart explained that he is “currently finishing the manuscript for my work about G. Washington\, which has the working title America’s Master Politician:  How George Washington Became GEORGE WASHINGTON.  Sadly the book will not be out by the time of this program.  My current expectation for the talk is to focus on two periods in GW’s life:  (1) his 15 years as a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses\, during which time he also served as a county court judge and parish vestry member\, which was a critical stage of his development as a political leader; and (2) his leadership in the creation and ratification of the Constitution – roughly 1785-88.  The Summer of 1787 is my book on the Constitutional Convention and Madison’s Gift explores the Madison-Washington relationship as one of the five critical partnerships in Madison’s career.” \nPlan to join us! \n

SUMMARY:‘They Were Good Soldiers’: African–Americans Serving in the Continental  Army\, 1775-1783
DESCRIPTION:The role of African-Americans\, most free but some enslaved\, in the regiments of the Continental Army is not well-known; neither is the fact that relatively large numbers served in southern regiments and that the greatest number served alongside their white comrades in integrated units. John Rees will discuss black soldiers’ acceptance\, service\, and experiences during and after the War for American Independence\, focusing on those who served in Continental regiments. African American women with the army will also be featured\, as will the only known wartime letter written by a black Revolutionary soldier. Free.

People like Jacob Francis\, a soldier of color from New Jersey. Francis was technically free\, but he was indentured as a young man. As his indenture (or contract) was sold from one man to another\, he moved from New Jersey to Massachusetts to the Caribbean\, back to Massachusetts\, where he joined the revolt. Right after the crossing\, Francis returned to his mother\, in Hunterdon County. Later\, he married a slave and bought her freedom. “It’s important to appreciate how each contribution helped the crossing\,” McCarty said. “But it’s also significant to understand that they were made by people\, many of them anonymous to this day\, who lived nuanced lives before and after that night.”

DESCRIPTION:Washington Crossing Historic Park’s Evening with the Curator series continues on Sunday\, October 27 at 7 PM with a free lecture on Jane Neely and women’s education in the 18th century.\nRegistration opens September 1. To register\, please call the Visitor Center at 215-493-4076.\nJane Neely was nine years old when the Continental Army camped on her family’s property (now the Thompson-Neely House and Farmstead) before the crossing in December 1776.\nTwelve years later\, Jane attended Philadelphia’s Young Ladies’ Academy: the first chartered school for girls in the United States. The academy opened just a few blocks from the nation’s first capital and the office where George Washington would soon preside as the first president of the United States.\nAnd it was the only school of its kind to include science in the curriculum.\n“There were many academies for young ladies throughout the country at that time\,” says park curator Kimberly McCarty\, who will give the lecture in October. “Typically\, though\, the curriculum focused on the more refined domestic arts\, such as embroidery and music\, the types of things an up-and-coming young lady would need to help her create a beautiful home to raise a family and entertain others of her social status. The study of science\, particularly chemistry\, was a product of the Enlightenment and was the territory of men—until the Young Ladies’ Academy came along.”
