SUMMARY:Old Barracks Museum Fall Lecture Series 2024: Michael C Harris “Germantown"
DESCRIPTION:Lectures will begin at 6pm at the Old Barracks Museum\, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be available. Copies of these titles will be available for purchase in-store or at www.barracks.org. All proceeds go towards supporting the Old Barracks Museum and its mission. \nOctober 10th: Michael C Harris “Germantown”\nToday\, Germantown is a busy neighborhood in Philadelphia. On October 4\, 1777\, it was a small village on the outskirts of the colonial capital whose surrounding fields and streets witnessed one of the largest battles of the American Revolution. The bloody battle represented George Washington’s attempt to recapture Philadelphia\, but has long been overshadowed by better-known events like Brandywine\, Saratoga\, and Valley Forge.

OBM Curator Sarah Kirk will share our “Soldiers of Color” research project to identify soldiers of color who fought at both battles of Trenton in 1776 and 1777. OBM living history interpreters Kaila Ettiene-Best and Steven Thomas will share their experiences interpreting the stories of people of color.\nState Archives: Archivists at the New Jersey State Archives will share under-researched documents pertaining to the American Revolution. Attendees will have the chance to review primary sources and brainstorm ideas for future research.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn regards to our commitment towards diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and accessibility at an organizational level\, we are making the conference free for folks who are experiencing economic hardship. SUMMARY:Traversing the Ten Crucial Days Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Traversing the Ten Crucial Days Bus Tour begins and ends at Washington Crossing\, PA while spending the day retracing the 25 December 1776 crossing of the Delaware through to 3 January\, 1777.  You will learn about the military engagements between remaining rag-tag elements of George Washington’s army against Hessian and British troops at Trenton\, Princeton\, and areas in-between. Historical Interpreters will tell the remarkable stories of these ten days that breathed crucial new life into the apparently expiring American Revolution. The events are discussed in the context of the local\, strategically important\, central New Jersey towns\, villages\, and farms; occupied by families with diverse backgrounds; practicing varied religions such as Quakers\, Presbyterians\, and Anglicans; and holding complex views on loyalty to the Revolution or the King. Hear how the terrain\, weaponry\, and weather\, influenced the ways the battles were fought and how the lives of the local people were disrupted by them. See where armies marched\, fought\, and struggled to survive on an otherwise peaceful landscape\, while the course of human history hung in the balance. \nHistorical interpreters: Tours are led by Larry Kidder\, author of CROSSROADS OF THE REVOLUTION: Trenton 1774 – 1783 and A PEOPLE HARASSED AND EXHAUSTED: The First Hunterdon County Militia and TEN CRUCIAL DAYS: Washington’s Vision for Victory Unfolds\, and Roger S. Williams; Co-Founder of TenCrucialDays.org\, a member of the Society of Military History and Society for Historians of the Early American Republic\,  Kidder and Williams are joined at each venue by the interpretive staff. \nCost: $145 per person includes bus fare\, lunch\, and donations to selected tour sites. Limit: 36 Guests.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to officially recognized friends’ groups of the four venues of the Ten Crucial Days Campaign: Washington Crossing Historic Park in Pennsylvania\, Washington Crossing Park Association in New Jersey\, The Old Barracks Museum in Trenton and the Princeton Battlefield Society in Princeton. \n\n\n\n\nPrivate Tours:  Click here for information about private customized tours.

SUMMARY:Important Role of Dance in 18th Century Society
DESCRIPTION:When Sue Dupre leads dances for the Patriots’ Week Colonial Ball each year\, she wishes she could tell the dancers much more about 18th century dancing\, especially why the 18th century folks didn’t need a dance caller for their balls and assemblies. Please gather with Sue for this video presentation to learn about the important role of dance in 18th society\, what dances were done and how they were taught\, and tidbits about dancing in the Delaware Valley in the 18th Century. This program is made possible\, in part\, by the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission through funding from the Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts\, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts

SUMMARY:Lecture: Joyce Malcolm "The Tragedy of Benedict Arnold: An American Life"
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Fall 2019 Lecture Series sponsored by the Sons of the\nRevolution in the State of New Jersey\, Joyce Malcolm will speak about her\nbook “The Tragedy of Benedict Arnold: An American Life ” on Tuesday\,\nNovember 14 at 7 PM. Books will be available for purchase in the\nQuartermaster’s Store Gift Shop. \nFinalist\, 2019 George Washington Book Prize \nA vivid and timely re-examination of one of young America’s most\ncomplicated figures: the war hero turned infamous traitor\, Benedict Arnold. \nProud and talented\, history now remembers this conflicted man solely\nthrough the lens of his last desperate act of treason. Yet the fall of\nBenedict Arnold remains one of the Revolutionary period’s great puzzles.\nWhy did a brilliant military commander\, who repeatedly risked his life\nfighting the British\, who was grievously injured in the line of duty\, and\nfell into debt personally funding his own troops\, ultimately became a\ntraitor to the patriot cause? \nHistorian Joyce Lee Malcolm skillfully unravels the man behind the myth and\ngives us a portrait of the true Arnold and his world. There was his\ndramatic victory against the British at Saratoga in 1777 and his troubled\nchildhood in a pre-revolutionary America beset with class tension and\neconomic instability. We witness his brilliant wartime military exploits\nand learn of his contentious relationship with a newly formed and fractious\nCongress\, fearful of powerful military leaders\, like Arnold\, who could\nthreaten the nation’s fragile democracy. \nThroughout\, Malcolm weaves in portraits of Arnold’s great allies―George\nWashington\, General Schuyler\, his beautiful and beloved wife Peggy Shippen\,\nand others―as well as his unrelenting enemy John Adams\, British General\nClinton\, and master spy John Andre. Thrilling and thought-provoking\, The\nTragedy of Benedict Arnold sheds new light on a man―as well on the nuanced\nand complicated time in which he lived.\nThe full lecture schedule is: \nAll lectures begin at 7 PM and the Museum Shop opens at 6:30 PM\nTuesday\, October 15: David Price – The Road to Assunpink Creek\nThursday\, October 24: John Gilbert McCurdy – Quarters\nTuesday\, October 29: Hal Taylor – Before Penn\nMonday\, November 4: Kenneth Gossard – Thalers and Pence\nThursday\, November 14: Peter Stark – Young Washington\nThursday\, November 21: Joyce Malcolm – The Tragedy of Benedict Arnold
