Led by the park’s Museum Curator\, Kimberly McCarty\, the club meets virtually via Zoom and focuses on books that shed new light on the Revolutionary era\, with special emphasis on the events surrounding the Delaware River crossing and the 1776 campaign. Free and open to all\, meetings typically take place on the third Monday of each month and provide an opportunity to connect with fellow readers while deepening your understanding of this pivotal period in American history. \nThe fighting prowess of United States Marines is second to none\, but few know of the Corps’ humble beginnings and what it achieved during the early years of the American Revolution. Jason Bohm rectifies this oversight with his eye-opening Washington’s Marines: The Origins of the Corps and the American Revolution\, 1775–1777. \nThe story begins with the oppressive days that drove America into a conflict for which it was ill-prepared\, when thirteen independent colonies commenced a war against the world’s most powerful military with nothing more than local militias\, privateers\, and other ad hoc units. The Continental Congress rushed to form an army and placed George Washington in command\, but soon realized that\, to win its freedom\, America would need men who could fight on the sea and on land. Enter the Marines. SUMMARY:Lecture – “Roger Lamb’s American Revolution: A British Soldier’s Story”
DESCRIPTION:We are honored to host Don N. Hagist\, Managing Editor of the Journal of the American Revolution (allthingsliberty.com) and a leading historian of British soldiers who served in America. His research is grounded in primary sources from archives in North America and Europe\, allowing him to tell the deeply personal and often overlooked stories of these soldiers and their families. \nHagist is also a consultant for the PBS documentary The American Revolution\, produced by Ken Burns\, and the author of several major works\, including Noble Volunteers\, The Revolution’s Last Men\, and These Distinguished Corps. He is also the editor of Roger Lamb’s American Revolution: A British Soldier’s Story. \nIn this talk\, Hagist explores the memoir of British soldier Roger Lamb\, whose writings provide rare insight into daily military life and the lives of civilians caught in the conflict.  He will highlight Lamb’s escape from American forces across the Delaware River in 1782.  An illustration of the incident includes the story of a Black ferryman in Bristol and what it reveals about the essential roles of river workers and enslaved laborers in the wartime landscape. \nThis lecture will be offered in a hybrid format\, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available. DESCRIPTION:Winter is the best time to look for woodpeckers and Washington Crossing State Park is full of these three-toed environmental engineers! This free program will focus on the various species of woodpecker in the park including Hairy\, Red-bellied\, and Pileated Woodpeckers. This program will walk about two miles in search of woodpeckers and their allies. Please meet at the Nature Center by 9 AM. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes for walking. No registration is required. All ages welcome. \nMeet us at the Nature Center in Washington Crossing State Park. The Park’s entrance is on Washington Crossing-Pennington Road\, halfway between Route 29 and Bear Tavern Road. Follow the signs to reach the Nature Center!

Free and open to all\, meetings typically take place on the third Monday of each month and provide an opportunity to connect with fellow readers while deepening your understanding of this pivotal period in American history. \nThe fighting prowess of United States Marines is second to none\, but few know of the Corps’ humble beginnings and what it achieved during the early years of the American Revolution. Jason Bohm rectifies this oversight with his eye-opening Washington’s Marines: The Origins of the Corps and the American Revolution\, 1775–1777. \nThe story begins with the oppressive days that drove America into a conflict for which it was ill-prepared\, when thirteen independent colonies commenced a war against the world’s most powerful military with nothing more than local militias\, privateers\, and other ad hoc units. The Continental Congress rushed to form an army and placed George Washington in command\, but soon realized that\, to win its freedom\, America would need men who could fight on the sea and on land. Enter the Marines.
