SUMMARY:Lecture – “Washington’s Marines: The Origins of the Corps and the American Revolution\, 1775-1777”
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 4 at 1:30 PM\, commemorate the Marine Corps birthday with Jason Q. Bohm (Maj. Gen. USMC) as he discusses his book on the founding and early years of the corps. \nThe story begins with the oppressive days that drove America into a conflict for which it was ill-prepared\, when thirteen independent colonies commenced a war against the world’s most powerful military with nothing more than local militias\, privateers\, and other ad hoc units. \nIt continues with the creation of the Continental Marines and the men who led them during the parallel paths followed by the Army and Marines in the war’s opening years and the early successes and failures at Lexington and Concord\, Bunker Hill\, Canada\, Boston\, Charleston\, and more. The story concludes as Washington’s Marines join their fellow soldiers in a protracted land campaign that culminated in turning-point victories at Trenton\, Assunpink Creek\, and Princeton. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. It will also be live-streamed on Zoom. Log-in information will be sent following registration. Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance. Click here to register on the DCNR website.

OBM Curator Sarah Kirk will share our “Soldiers of Color” research project to identify soldiers of color who fought at both battles of Trenton in 1776 and 1777. OBM living history interpreters Kaila Ettiene-Best and Steven Thomas will share their experiences interpreting the stories of people of color.\nState Archives: Archivists at the New Jersey State Archives will share under-researched documents pertaining to the American Revolution. SUMMARY:Camp Life: Enduring the 1776 Bucks County Encampments
DESCRIPTION:The desperate condition of the soldiers who crossed the Delaware River on December 25\, 1776 has become as legendary as the crossing itself. Less well-known are the conditions under which these soldiers lived in the weeks preceding the crossing. \nOn Sunday\, December 3 at 7 PM\, Park Military Historian Colin Zimmerman will examine the reality of the difficult and complex encampments and how they impacted what would prove to be a decisive military stroke in the American War for Independence. \nDue to the overwhelming response to attend\, we are switching entirely to livestream. There will be no in-person component to this program. The event is free to attend but registration is required to receive the Zoom link. Click here to register.

SUMMARY:2nd Annual Washington's Landing in New Jersey
DESCRIPTION:On December 10\, from 11 am to 3:30 pm\, please join NJ State Park historians\, the Washington Crossing Park Association\, the First Rhode Island Regiment\, and other NJ-based reenactor groups who will give the public an opportunity to experience both the Crossing and the March to Trenton through the eyes of the men and women who lived it.\nThe title of this event is “Washington’s Landing in New Jersey\,” which occurs on the same day as the Pennsylvania Park’s rehearsal crossing of the Delaware. The encampment will take place at the New Jersey Park’s “Overlook\,” next to the historic Johnson Ferry House\, with a wonderful view of the river below. Reenactors will patrol the lower park and encourage visitors to undertake a brief “march” — led by Ronald Rinaldi as General Nathaneal Greene — over the Park’s pedestrian bridge and up to its Overlook to be met with cozy fires\, hot cider\, and skilled reenactors who will regale them with tales of the rich history that took place in Mercer County. NJ historians will narrate the Crossing rehearsal\, and special efforts will be made to engage the youngest visitors in hopes of sparking their interest in New Jersey history. Free to enter\, but a $10/carload donation is requested!
