DESCRIPTION:Winter is the best time to look for woodpeckers and Washington Crossing State Park is full of these three-toed environmental engineers! This free program will focus on the various species of woodpecker in the park including Hairy\, Red-bellied\, and Pileated Woodpeckers. This program will walk about two miles in search of woodpeckers and their allies. Please meet at the Nature Center by 9 AM. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes for walking. No registration is required. All ages welcome. \nMeet us at the Nature Center in Washington Crossing State Park. DESCRIPTION:Daniel Bray learned about the Waterways along the Delaware River rising to captain of his own Durham Boat in 1769 at age 19. \nPrior to that he was a Scottish farmer in Baptisttown\, Hunterdon County\, NJ\, where his carpentry skills allowed him to learn how to build Durham Boats at Rodmans. He answered the “Call for Freedom” and joined the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon County NJ Militia\, earning a promotion to captain in 1775. He earned his position in history when General George Washington needed his help along with others to obtain his own fleet of boats. He used them during the Crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas day Dec 25\, 1776 to attack the Hessians in Trenton\, NJ. Later he was promoted to general of the NJ State Militia and participated in the War of 1812. \nJoin us at Washington Crossing State Park’s “Stone Barn” building\, near the Johnson Ferry House. Free and open to all\, meetings typically take place on the third Monday of each month and provide an opportunity to connect with fellow readers while deepening your understanding of this pivotal period in American history. \nThe fighting prowess of United States Marines is second to none\, but few know of the Corps’ humble beginnings and what it achieved during the early years of the American Revolution. Jason Bohm rectifies this oversight with his eye-opening Washington’s Marines: The Origins of the Corps and the American Revolution\, 1775–1777. \nThe story begins with the oppressive days that drove America into a conflict for which it was ill-prepared\, when thirteen independent colonies commenced a war against the world’s most powerful military with nothing more than local militias\, privateers\, and other ad hoc units. The Continental Congress rushed to form an army and placed George Washington in command\, but soon realized that\, to win its freedom\, America would need men who could fight on the sea and on land. Enter the Marines. DESCRIPTION:Clear trails with the Trail Stewards! Tools are provided\, although you’re encouraged to bring gloves or loppers if you like. Please dress in layers\, wear a hat\, work gloves\, work or hiking boots\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and long pants. We will work in the rain & snow\, but not in a downpour\, so consider rain gear! Please also bring plenty of water and a snack. \nIf you’ve never volunteered with us before\, please arrive at 8:30 at the Nature Center to fill out Volunteer Application Forms. Anyone who volunteers for two sessions will receive one of our AWESOME t-shirts! The Stewards meet for lunch afterwards\, courtesy of the WCPA.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “River of Victory: The Daily Delaware Crossings of December 1776”
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome award-winning historian and author William “Larry” Kidder. Kidder is the author of multiple books on the Ten Crucial Days campaign and New Jersey’s role in the American Revolution.  His work is known for blending military history with the civilian experience. \nDrawing from his newest book\, River of Victory\, Kidder examines the multiple crossings of the Delaware River by the Continental Army in December 1776\, the army’s encampments in Bucks County\, multiple harassment raids against the enemy in New Jersey\, and Washington’s decision to attack Trenton. \nThis lecture will be offered in a hybrid format\, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available. Pre-registration is required for all participants. \nWashington Crossing Historic Park’s free lecture series is made possible by our General Level Supporter\, America250PA\, through the Lecture250 Grant Program.
