SUMMARY:Lecture – “Environmental Legacies: How the War of Independence Affected the Natural World in Predictable and Surprising Ways”
DESCRIPTION:Join Juniata College Professor Dave Hsiung for his presentation of how the revolutionary war impacted the natural world. Dr. David Hsiung is the Dr. Charles R. and Shirley A. Knox Professor of History at Juniata College\, where he has taught since earning his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and his B.A. from Yale. A dedicated teacher and scholar\, he has received multiple honors for excellence in the classroom\, including Juniata’s Beachley Award for Distinguished Teaching and Pennsylvania’s “Professor of the Year” from the Carnegie Foundation. His research spans Appalachian history\, environmental perspectives on the American Revolution\, and interdisciplinary collaborations with students that bring history to life through hands-on experimentation and exploration. \nThe War of Independence affected the natural world in important and lasting ways. The lecture will examine deforestation at Valley Forge; raids that seized animals but also produced some surprisingly “positive” effects; and lead musket balls left on battlefields that may only now be poisoning the land. DESCRIPTION:Join us each month as historical interpreters and reenactors bring a piece of history to life at Washington Crossing Historic Park. Each month’s program will run from 11-3\, and will cover various aspects on military life during the American Revolution. The programs will take place on the 2nd Saturday of each month April – September. There is no admission or registration\, all you have to do is show up and be ready to learn something new! \n  \nSeptember’s program will feature Supplies! The Continental army was infamously short of supplies of all sorts\, food\, ammunition\, weapons\, etc. Learn about how various normally civilian trades and industries re-oriented themselves to supply the army during the war and see demonstrations of those trades in action.

SUMMARY:African Americans in the Revolutionary War Navy
DESCRIPTION:The Continental Army and militias included 3\,000 to 5\,000 Black soldiers and the British recruited about 12\,000. Our speaker\, Leon Brooks began his study of those men and their families in 2001\, when he was invited to join re-enactors of the First Rhode Island Regiment\, which was about 80% Black and 20% Native American. Later\, Leon connected with another unit\, the Marblehead Marines. Marblehead\, a few miles north of Boston\, was the home of General John  Glover\, a fisherman and seafarer who organized one of the first units of  the United States Marines. The Marblehead Marines were the boatmen who  rowed Washington across the Delaware.  \nWe are delighted to host Mr. Brooks as he shares tales of African Americans in the Navy during the Revolutionary War\, and in particular their invaluable contributions to the 1776 Crossing of the Delaware.

DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us the 4th Friday of each month from 11:00am – 3:00pm\, this May to September to learn about life on the Thompson-Neely Farmstead. In the 18th Century much of Bucks County was cultivated farmland\, with a wide variety of activities required to keep them running. From Animal care\, to structure maintenance\, to harvesting and preserving\, each of these programs at the Thompson-Neely Farmstead will cover a different set of tasks that would be performed on the farm\, so that you can see and experience what life was like for many people in the years surrounding the Revolution \nFor September our demonstrators will show how the harvest was preserved for use in the winter months\, through drying\, pickling salting\, etc. This was an important activity to ensure a steady food supply even after the growing season ended for the winter.

SUMMARY:Washington Crossing State Park: Natural History & Design Webinar (with the Pennington Library)
DESCRIPTION:Washington Crossing State Park has changed in almost unimaginable  ways over the last 100 years. From farm fields to gardens to plantations  to old fields\, shaped by deer\, disease\, and invasive species\, the park  represents a fluid and ever-changing landscape. Every aspect of the park  has\, whether directly or indirectly\, been shaped  by human-driven forces. Using Peter Osborne’s book\, Where Washington Once Led\,  this talk aims to uncover some of these forces to reveal how the park  has evolved\, enabling participants to read the landscape through  natural signs and artifacts. \nHuman landscapes cannot go “natural” on their own. We have the  opportunity to restore this landscape\, either along the lines of  original designs such as with the George Washington Memorial Arboretum\,  which opened in 1932 and displayed native New Jersey shrubs and trees\,  or in the form of ecological restoration\, aiming to return  the human-dependent landscape back to nature. The talk will conclude  with a discussion of the different options and the conservation work of  the WCPA. \nThis online event is in collaboration with the Pennington Library. Join us in learning the how and why of Washington’s victories at Trenton and Princeton in late 1776 and early 1777 during Price’s presentation on his new book\, “Winning the Ten Crucial Days: The Keys to Victory in George Washington’s Legendary Winter Campaign.”\nPrice spoke at the Old Barracks Museum in 2019\, presenting on his book “The Road to Assunpink Creek: Liberty’s Desperate Hour and the Ten Crucial Days of the American Revolution”\, and we are thrilled to have him join us again this fall.\nThis event will take place on Thursday\, October 2nd\, at the Historic Trenton Masonic Temple. The lecture will begin at 6 pm\, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be available. Copies of these titles are available for purchase at the lecture or online at The Quartermaster Store. Book orders can be shipped or held for pickup at the Historic Trenton Masonic Temple the night of the event. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an introduction to the fantastic world of fungi with this walk  on Sunday\, October 5th at 10am. Fungi expert\, Maranda Boggs\, along with  park staff will lead a walk around Washington Crossing State Park in  search of decomposers in all shapes and sizes. The walk will start at  the Nature Center and the group will walk 2-3 miles over the course of  two hours with occasional step over points and uneven ground along the  trails at times. \nBecause we’re paying a stipend to our presenter\,  the cost of this event is $12.00 per adult and $8.00 for children 12 and  under\, plus EventBrite fees. We are limiting attendence to 25 people.  \nIf  we’re unable to recoup the stipend\, we may cancel the event.
