SUMMARY:African Americans in the Revolutionary War Navy
DESCRIPTION:The Continental Army and militias included 3\,000 to 5\,000 Black soldiers and the British recruited about 12\,000. Our speaker\, Leon Brooks began his study of those men and their families in 2001\, when he was invited to join re-enactors of the First Rhode Island Regiment\, which was about 80% Black and 20% Native American. Later\, Leon connected with another unit\, the Marblehead Marines. Marblehead\, a few miles north of Boston\, was the home of General John  Glover\, a fisherman and seafarer who organized one of the first units of  the United States Marines. The Marblehead Marines were the boatmen who  rowed Washington across the Delaware.  \nWe are delighted to host Mr. Brooks as he shares tales of African Americans in the Navy during the Revolutionary War\, and in particular their invaluable contributions to the 1776 Crossing of the Delaware.

DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us the 4th Friday of each month from 11:00am – 3:00pm\, this May to September to learn about life on the Thompson-Neely Farmstead. In the 18th Century much of Bucks County was cultivated farmland\, with a wide variety of activities required to keep them running. From Animal care\, to structure maintenance\, to harvesting and preserving\, each of these programs at the Thompson-Neely Farmstead will cover a different set of tasks that would be performed on the farm\, so that you can see and experience what life was like for many people in the years surrounding the Revolution \nFor September our demonstrators will show how the harvest was preserved for use in the winter months\, through drying\, pickling salting\, etc. This was an important activity to ensure a steady food supply even after the growing season ended for the winter.

SUMMARY:Washington Crossing State Park: Natural History & Design Webinar (with the Pennington Library)
DESCRIPTION:Washington Crossing State Park has changed in almost unimaginable  ways over the last 100 years. From farm fields to gardens to plantations  to old fields\, shaped by deer\, disease\, and invasive species\, the park  represents a fluid and ever-changing landscape. Every aspect of the park  has\, whether directly or indirectly\, been shaped  by human-driven forces. Using Peter Osborne’s book\, Where Washington Once Led\,  this talk aims to uncover some of these forces to reveal how the park  has evolved\, enabling participants to read the landscape through  natural signs and artifacts. \nHuman landscapes cannot go “natural” on their own. We have the  opportunity to restore this landscape\, either along the lines of  original designs such as with the George Washington Memorial Arboretum\,  which opened in 1932 and displayed native New Jersey shrubs and trees\,  or in the form of ecological restoration\, aiming to return  the human-dependent landscape back to nature. The talk will conclude  with a discussion of the different options and the conservation work of  the WCPA. \nThis online event is in collaboration with the Pennington Library. DESCRIPTION:The Old Barracks Museum is excited to host David Price\, for our upcoming Author Lecture at the Historic Trenton Masonic Temple. Join us in learning the how and why of Washington’s victories at Trenton and Princeton in late 1776 and early 1777 during Price’s presentation on his new book\, “Winning the Ten Crucial Days: The Keys to Victory in George Washington’s Legendary Winter Campaign.”\nPrice spoke at the Old Barracks Museum in 2019\, presenting on his book “The Road to Assunpink Creek: Liberty’s Desperate Hour and the Ten Crucial Days of the American Revolution”\, and we are thrilled to have him join us again this fall.\nThis event will take place on Thursday\, October 2nd\, at the Historic Trenton Masonic Temple. The lecture will begin at 6 pm\, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be available. Copies of these titles are available for purchase at the lecture or online at The Quartermaster Store. Book orders can be shipped or held for pickup at the Historic Trenton Masonic Temple the night of the event. All proceeds go towards supporting the Old Barracks Museum and its mission.\nParking will be available in the gated lot next to the Old Barracks Museum. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an introduction to the fantastic world of fungi with this walk  on Sunday\, October 5th at 10am. Fungi expert\, Maranda Boggs\, along with  park staff will lead a walk around Washington Crossing State Park in  search of decomposers in all shapes and sizes. The walk will start at  the Nature Center and the group will walk 2-3 miles over the course of  two hours with occasional step over points and uneven ground along the  trails at times. \nBecause we’re paying a stipend to our presenter\,  the cost of this event is $12.00 per adult and $8.00 for children 12 and  under\, plus EventBrite fees. We are limiting attendence to 25 people.  \nIf  we’re unable to recoup the stipend\, we may cancel the event. If that  should happen\, all tickets will be refunded and you will be notified. \nIf  a raindate is required\, we will let you know. That summer\, an unruly rebel army under George Washington repeatedly threatened to burn the city rather than let the British take it. Shortly after the Crown’s forces took New York City\, much of it mysteriously burned to the ground. \nThis is the first book to fully explore the Great Fire of 1776 and why its origins remained a mystery even after the British investigated it in 1776 and 1783. Uncovering stories of espionage\, terror\, and radicalism\, Benjamin L. He’ll also discuss the Nature Center itself\, currently under renovation\, and it will offer to local residents. \nThis year\, immerse yourself in the natural world with outings focused on local ecology\, the magnificent journey of migratory birds\, the vital work of pollinators\, the fantastic world of fungi\, and the impressive spectacle of birds of prey! \nLooking ahead to 2026\, we’ll delve into the park’s rich history with special programming tied to Washington’s crossing of the Delaware. \nJoe will also discuss how you can get involved through new volunteer opportunities\, conservation management\, and other impactful projects that will shape the park’s future. \nAbout Joe: Growing up in South Jersey near a steady stream\, Naturalist Joe Moore developed a strong curiosity about the natural and cultural world. With a lifelong love for history and supportive parents\, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Rowan University in 2014. A year later\, Joe enrolled in American Public University’s Environmental Management program\, completing his Master of Science degree in 2017. Blending his interests in history and nature\, Joe went on to work at several non-profits focused on conservation and preserving coastal heritage along the Jersey Shore through eco-tourism. In our region\, the Delaware River is used by many migrating birds in order to travel north or south during fall and spring.  \nThis outing will meet in the Washington’s Grove parking lot on River Drive in Titusville\, NJ\, next to the Washington Crossing Bridge.
