DESCRIPTION:The Washington Crossing Historic Park Book Club invites history enthusiasts to explore the American Revolution through engaging discussion and carefully selected readings. Led by the park’s Museum Curator\, Kimberly McCarty\, the club meets virtually via Zoom and focuses on books that shed new light on the Revolutionary era\, with special emphasis on the events surrounding the Delaware River crossing and the 1776 campaign. Free and open to all\, meetings typically take place on the third Monday of each month and provide an opportunity to connect with fellow readers while deepening your understanding of this pivotal period in American history. \nRunning from Bondage tells the compelling stories of enslaved women\, who comprised one-third of all runaways\, and the ways in which they fled or attempted to flee bondage during and after the Revolutionary War. Karen Cook Bell’s enlightening and original contribution to the study of slave resistance in eighteenth-century America explores the individual and collective lives of these women and girls of diverse circumstances\, while also providing details about what led them to escape. She demonstrates that there were in fact two wars being waged during the Revolutionary Era: a political revolution for independence from Great Britain and a social revolution for emancipation and equality in which Black women played an active role. DESCRIPTION:Washington Crossing Historic Park is pleased to partner with the American Philosophical Society and its David Center for the American Revolution to host a lecture by historian Michael Auslin on his new book\, National Treasure: How the Declaration of Independence Made America. \nIn this engaging talk\, Auslin explores the remarkable history of the Declaration of Independence—from its drafting by Thomas Jefferson to its enduring role as a symbol of American ideals. More than a static artifact\, the Declaration has lived many lives: carried through war\, hidden for safekeeping\, reproduced and reinterpreted across generations\, and invoked by figures ranging from Abraham Lincoln to Franklin D. Roosevelt. \nDrawing on vivid storytelling and historical insight\, National Treasure traces how this singular document has inspired movements for freedom and equality while also raising enduring questions about unity\, identity\, and democracy. As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding\, this lecture offers a timely reflection on the principles that continue to shape the United States. \nThis lecture will be offered in a hybrid format\, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available. DESCRIPTION:After making its Washington Crossing debut during our Independence Day Celebration\, the full-scale Durham boat replica has remained in the Boat Barn\, where the Independence Seaport Museum (ISM) team continues its work. \nSince July 4\, Dave Dormand\, Director of the Seaport Boat Shop\, has installed wooden plugs to conceal the fasteners\, begun smoothing the hull\, steam-bent structural supports for the deck\, and prepared the breasthooks and aft deck beams for installation. \nNext\, the team will complete the fore and aft decks\, build the bulkheads beneath them\, install the flooring\, and begin finish work\, including painting and oiling the hull and decks. \nVisitors will have a new opportunity to learn about the project during the first on-site Table Saw Talks at WCHP on Sunday\, August 16 and Sunday\, September 13 from 10:00-11:00 am. Led by ISM shipwrights\, these informal conversations will explore traditional wooden boatbuilding methods\, materials\, and the history of the Durham boats used during Washington’s famous crossing of the Delaware. \nThis is a pay-what-you-wish program. Following the battle\, visitors are invited to stay for a special patriotic ceremony featuring a 21-gun salute and a community sing-along of “Happy Birthday” led by Mayor Tara Grunde-McLaughlin. \nAfternoon experiences invite visitors to explore historic churches\, museums\, meeting houses\, and community landmarks while discovering stories spanning the Revolutionary War\, Civil War\, early Pennsylvania history\, and the people who helped shape Newtown and America. \nFeatured experiences include demonstrations of Newtown’s restored 200-year-old hand-pumped fire engine\, first-person interpretation portraying Harriet Tubman\, Hessian soldiers discussing their experiences during the Revolutionary War\, William Penn interpretation\, historic exhibits\, and much more. \nVisitors are also invited to enjoy a Great American Cookout in the Boone Garden featuring complimentary hot dogs\, chips\, water\, and ice cream courtesy of Penn Community Bank and the Newtown Rotary Club. \nPresented by the Newtown Historic Association and community partners\, Newtown Celebrates America 250 is part of the broader Semiquincentennial celebration taking place throughout Bucks County and Pennsylvania. \nLearn more at www.newtown2026.com.
