SUMMARY:2nd Pennsylvania Reg at Princeton Battlefield
DESCRIPTION:Come to Princeton Battlefield on July 1st and see the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment!! \nStart the July 4 holiday with the rattle of musketry and thunder of cannon mixed with the sounds of fife and drum as The Second Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Line opens a window to the past and presents a vivid and exciting look at the soldier of the American Revolution at Princeton’s historic Clarke House on Saturday\, July 1\, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. \nThe Second Pennsylvania Regiment is a colorful and authentic recreation of an actual patriot military unit that fought in the War for Independence. Founded in 1966\, the organization is made up of history buffs from five states who have dedicated themselves to show the true appearance and tactics of the 18th Century soldier. \nThis respected living history group will provide a lively and accurate look at the typical infantry company of the period as the men perform the drill taught by Baron Von Steuben to Washington’s troops at Valley Forge as they stand and fire smoky volleys from their flintlock muskets. The unit is supported by blasts from one of the finest reproduction colonial field guns in existence. At the end of the demonstration\, which includes an enthusiastic bayonet charge\, the audience will be invited onto the field to talk with the members and see their uniforms and gear firsthand. Several firing demonstrations are scheduled throughout the day. \nEach man has dressed and equipped himself as a soldier of the original Second Pennsylvania appeared when it fought the British more than two centuries ago as part of Gen. “Mad Anthony” Wayne’s division. All the items worn and carried by the individuals are painstakingly hand-crafted from existing specimens in museums and private collections–from the black tricorner hats down to the buttons on the blue and red wool regimental coats. The men are joined by a number of camp followers dressed in 18th Century garb who will demonstrate various camp skills used by the many women who accompanied their husbands on the long campaigns. \nAt other times the versatile unit portrays an actual British regiment: the 43rd Regiment of Foot. Renowned for its authenticity\, the organization has appeared in films\, television programs\, and major commemorations at historic sites in the United States and Europe. Information about becoming a member of the organization will also be available at the event\, or at the unit website at this link.  \nThe Princeton Battlefield Society supports the appearance. \nC. SUMMARY:Jacob and Mary Francis Gravesite Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to join the Daughters of the American Revolution\, the Sons of the Revolution\, the Sons of the American Revolution and other lineage organizations for the \nJacob and Mary Francis Gravesite Commemoration \nUnveiling of Cemetery Interpretive Panel \nFlemington Baptist Church\, 170 Main Street\, Flemington\, NJ 08822\, on Sunday\, June 25th\, 2023 \nNoon to 3:00 PM. \nJacob Francis 1754-1836 \nJacob Francis was a free Black man born in Amwell Township and died in Flemington\, New Jersey. During his long life\, he was involved in both the American Revolution and the struggle for equal rights. \nBound out as an indentured servant from childhood until age 21\, he lived in New Jersey\, New York\, St. John in the West Indies\, and Salem\, Massachusetts. After completing his indenture time\, he enlisted in the Continental army in October 1775 at a time when General Washington was trying to prevent Black men from enlisting. He served through the siege of Boston\, the New York Campaign\, and the Battle of Trenton before his enlistment expired on January 1\, 1777. After his Continental service\, he served in the Third Hunterdon County Regiment of the New Jersey militia for the remainder of the war. He had survived great hardships and dangers while performing in a complimentary fashion. \n He fulfilled his vision of becoming a successful farmer and raising a family. In 1789 he married an enslaved woman named Mary\, purchased her\, and set her free. Together they raised nine children. Jacob and Mary became well-respected members of the Flemington Baptist Church and resided for several decades in Flemington. Their youngest son\, Abner Hunt Francis\, became very well educated and spent his adult life working for the cause of abolition and equal rights for all people. He had been inspired by his father\, whom he always said\, the “principles of ’76\, which led … his country to throw off the British yoke\, actuated my father to shoulder his musket and serve through a bloody contest. And not only my father’s but the blood of colored men were freely shed in that struggle for national independence.” \nThe fight for independence during the American Revolution was successful during his lifetime\, but the revolution to guarantee equal rights for all people still went on. \nFor more information\, click here.
