SUMMARY:Captain Daniel Bray
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Bray was first a Scottish farmer from Baptisttown\, NJ who became an experienced Waterman on the Delaware River\, rising to Captain of his own Durham boat in 1769 at age 19. Later he joined the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon County NJ Militia\, rising to captain in 1775. He earned his position in history when General George Washington charged him with obtaining the boats needed to cross the Delaware River on Christmas Night in 1776. Later he was promoted to general of the militia\, and fought in the War of 1812. \nEnjoy a first-person interpretation about Daniel Bray — from his boyhood as a farmer\, to building Durham boats \,to becoming a waterman on the river\, to marriage\, to getting the boats for George Washington — then back to farming and finally the War of 1812. There is some audience participation\, two costume changes\, and a short play. The talk is supported by slides\, a River Shanty\, and a recited ballad.    \nThe narrator Daniel Nurmi McAuliffe has been a reenactor for 32 years with the 5th PA Regiment\, crossing the Delaware numerous times. In 2016 he was asked to portray Captain Daniel Bray to replace his deceased mentor\, Dick Bray\, a direct descendant. \nCome hear how this Scotsman learned how to “Git On Wit It!” in his life.

SUMMARY:David Center Lecture – “The Painter’s Fire: A Forgotten History of the Artists Who Championed the American Revolution”
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis Lecture is hosted at Washington Crossing Historic Park in partnership with the David Center at the American Philosophical Society \n  \nThe war that we now call the American Revolution was not only fought in the colonies with muskets and bayonets. On both sides of the Atlantic\, artists armed with paint\, canvas\, and wax played an integral role in forging revolutionary ideals. Zara Anishanslin charts the intertwined lives of three such figures who dared to defy the British monarchy: Robert Edge Pine\, Prince Demah\, and Patience Wright. From London to Boston\, from Jamaica to Paris\, from Bath to Philadelphia\, these largely forgotten patriots boldly risked their reputations and their lives to declare independence. \nMostly excluded from formal political or military power\, these artists and their circles fired salvos against the king on the walls of the Royal Academy as well as on the battlefields of North America. They used their talents to inspire rebellion\, define American patriotism\, and fashion a new political culture\, often alongside more familiar revolutionary figures such as Benjamin Franklin and Phillis Wheatley. Pine\, an award-winning British artist rumored to be of African descent\, infused massive history paintings with politics and eventually emigrated to the young United States. Demah\, the first identifiable enslaved portrait painter in America\, was Pine’s pupil in London before self-emancipating and enlisting to fight for the Patriot cause. And Wright\, a Long Island–born wax sculptor who became a sensation in London\, loudly advocated for revolution while acting as an informal patriot spy. \nIlluminating a transatlantic and cosmopolitan world of revolutionary fervor\, The Painter’s Fire reveals an extraordinary cohort whose experiences testify to both the promise and the limits of liberty in the founding era. \nTo Register for the lecture please register on the APA’s website; \n
