SUMMARY:Black History Month Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Black History Month with an engaging and thought-provoking program at Pennsbury Manor. On February 23rd from 1-4pm\, join Pennsbury Manor and Gather Place as we grapple with how Quakers’ ideals of equality and justice coexisted with slavery.\n\n\nLearn about the history of slavery in Pennsylvania from Pennsbury’s Director\, Doug Miller. Then\, enjoy a dramatization of the 1688 Germantown Quaker Petition Against Slavery\, the first protest of slavery by a religious body in the thirteen colonies. We’ll discuss William Penn’s participation in the institution of slavery in the context of rising pro-abolition views amongst Quakers.\n\n\nAfterwards\, enjoy a riveting presentation by Shirley Lee Corsey\, Executive Director of Gather Place museum at the Historic African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church of Yardley. Witness her compelling first-person portrayal of Susanna Warder—an enslaved woman who lived and worked at Pennsbury Manor from birth in 1701 until death at the age of 109.\n\n\nMs. Corsey will then illuminate untold stories of African American contributions to Yardley Borough\, Bucks County\, and beyond that connect local history to powerful themes of justice and equality.\n\n\nAdmission to this event is free. Donations are encouraged.\n\n\n\nDon’t miss the chance to hear these powerful testimonials as we pay tribute to the strength and resilience of the people\, Black and white\, enslaved and free\, who sacrificed to ensure a more just future for all.

SUMMARY:Cadwalader Lecture Series: Black Soldiers in America’s Wars with John Rees
DESCRIPTION:The Princeton Battlefield Society (PBS) and Morven Museum & Garden are pleased to host the 2nd Cadwalader Lecture featuring local author and historian John Rees. Rees will discuss the largely unknown and under-appreciated role Black soldiers played in the fight for Independence at Princeton and the American Revolution. \nRees is the author of the newly released Don Troiani’s Black Soldiers in America’s Wars\, 1754-1865\, written with prominent military artist Don Troiani. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing by the author. \nThe evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a reception and refreshments followed by the talk at 7:00 p.m. \nPBS and Morven would like to thank the Cadwalader Lecture’s sponsors\, the Cadwalader and Morehouse families.  \nAbout John Rees\nDuring his career\, Rees has centered his writing on the common soldiers and women who served with the armies of the Revolution. He has authored over 200 articles\, many available online. His first book\, “They Were Good Soldiers: African Americans Serving in the Continental Army\, 1775-1783 was published in 2019. \nAbout Don Troiani\nDon Troiani is well-known for his extremely accurate historical and military paintings.  His work has appeared in numerous publications and is represented in the collections of many museums\, including the Smithsonian’s Museum of History and Technology\, the United States Marine Corps Museum\, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. His work has recently been featured in a year-long exhibition at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. \nAbout the Cadwalader Lectures\nConcerned with Americans’ ignorance about the fight for Independence and the Battle\, PBS created the Cadwalader Series to educate new generations about the Battle and the American Revolution as part of its two-year program to honor the 250th Anniversary of the Nation’s birth and the Battle of Princeton in 2026 and 2027. The Series is named after Gen. John Cadwalader\, one of the American heroes at the Battle.

Register Here \nSophia Rosenfeld\, will be discussing her new book The Age of Choice:  A History of Freedom in Modern Life. \nThomas Paine was the first great American polemicist for the right to vote—or choice in the political sphere.  But it is not at all clear that what Paine and his contemporaries had in mind in the late eighteenth century was choice in the contemporary sense.  This talk will consider how the idea and experience of choice have evolved from the revolutionary moment to our present. \nSophia Rosenfeld is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History and chair of the History Department at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of Democracy and Truth: A Short History and Common Sense: A Political History\, among other books. Her writing has also appeared in leading publications such as the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, and the Nation.
