SUMMARY:Pennsbury Manor Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join us for Pennsbury Manor’s NEW Book Club: \n  \nSaturday\, October 17 @ 2pm \n\nDiscussion of “Year of Wonders” by Geraldine Brooks\nFree Admission\nCheck local libraries and bookstores for “Year of Wonders.” For those in the Yardley area\, we recommend visiting Commonplace Reader.\nAttendees are welcome to stay after the book club to explore the grounds with the purchase of an admission ticket.\n\n  \nBOOK DESCRIPTION: \nWhen an infected bolt of cloth carries plague from London to an isolated village\, a housemaid named Anna Frith emerges as an unlikely heroine and healer. Through Anna’s eyes we follow the story of the fateful year of 1666\, as she and her fellow villagers confront the spread of disease and superstition. As death reaches into every household and villagers turn from prayers to murderous witch-hunting\, Anna must find the strength to confront the disintegration of her community and the lure of illicit love. As she struggles to survive and grow\, a year of catastrophe becomes instead annus mirabilis\, a “year of wonders.” \nInspired by the true story of Eyam\, a village in the rugged hill country of England\, Year of Wonders is a richly detailed evocation of a singular moment in history. Written with stunning emotional intelligence and introducing “an inspiring heroine” (The Wall Street Journal)\, Brooks blends love and learning\, loss and renewal into a spellbinding and unforgettable read. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe Washington Crossing Historic Park Book Club invites history enthusiasts to explore the American Revolution through engaging discussion and carefully selected readings. Led by the park’s Museum Curator\, Kimberly McCarty\, the club meets virtually via Zoom and focuses on books that shed new light on the Revolutionary era\, with special emphasis on the events surrounding the Delaware River crossing and the 1776 campaign. Free and open to all\, meetings typically take place on the third Monday of each month and provide an opportunity to connect with fellow readers while deepening your understanding of this pivotal period in American history. \nThe fighting prowess of United States Marines is second to none\, but few know of the Corps’ humble beginnings and what it achieved during the early years of the American Revolution. Jason Bohm rectifies this oversight with his eye-opening Washington’s Marines: The Origins of the Corps and the American Revolution\, 1775–1777. \nThe story begins with the oppressive days that drove America into a conflict for which it was ill-prepared\, when thirteen independent colonies commenced a war against the world’s most powerful military with nothing more than local militias\, privateers\, and other ad hoc units. The Continental Congress rushed to form an army and placed George Washington in command\, but soon realized that\, to win its freedom\, America would need men who could fight on the sea and on land. Enter the Marines. Bohm artfully tells the story of the creation of the Continental Marines and the men who led them during the parallel paths followed by the Army and Marines in the opening years of the war and through the early successes and failures at Lexington and Concord\, Bunker Hill\, Canada\, Boston\, Charleston\, and more. \nWashington’s Marines:  The Origins of the Corps and the American Revolution\, 1775-1777 \n\nSeptember 21 – Prologue – Chapter 3\nOctober 19 – Chapters 4-5\nNovember 16- Chapters 6-7\nDecember 21- Chapters 8-9\nJanuary 21- Chapter 10 – Appendix B\n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture – “Roger Lamb’s American Revolution: A British Soldier’s Story”
DESCRIPTION:We are honored to host Don N. Hagist\, Managing Editor of the Journal of the American Revolution (allthingsliberty.com) and a leading historian of British soldiers who served in America. His research is grounded in primary sources from archives in North America and Europe\, allowing him to tell the deeply personal and often overlooked stories of these soldiers and their families. \nHagist is also a consultant for the PBS documentary The American Revolution\, produced by Ken Burns\, and the author of several major works\, including Noble Volunteers\, The Revolution’s Last Men\, and These Distinguished Corps. He is also the editor of Roger Lamb’s American Revolution: A British Soldier’s Story. \nIn this talk\, Hagist explores the memoir of British soldier Roger Lamb\, whose writings provide rare insight into daily military life and the lives of civilians caught in the conflict.  He will highlight Lamb’s escape from American forces across the Delaware River in 1782.  An illustration of the incident includes the story of a Black ferryman in Bristol and what it reveals about the essential roles of river workers and enslaved laborers in the wartime landscape. \nThis lecture will be offered in a hybrid format\, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available. Pre-registration is required for all participants. \nWashington Crossing Historic Park’s free lecture series is made possible by our General Level Supporter\, America250PA\, through the Lecture250 Grant Program.

SUMMARY:Twilight Garden Tour: Poison\, Potions & Folklore in the Colonial Garden
DESCRIPTION:As dusk settles over Washington Crossing Historic Park\, step with us onto the shadowed paths of the Hibbs House Kitchen Garden as we step back into time to discover the danger and mystery hidden within the 18th century garden. \nJoin Park Historical Horticulturist Anna Davis for a twilight exploration of the plants that lived on the darker edge of the colonial garden. In the 18th century\, gardens were more than places of beauty and food; they were also sources of powerful medicines\, protective herbs\, dyes\, and occasionally plants with dangerous reputations. \nDuring this atmospheric evening walk\, discover the fascinating stories behind herbs believed to ward off evil\, plants that could heal or harm depending on their use\, and the folklore that surrounded everyday garden plants in early America. From bitter wormwood to the deep red dyes of madder root\, the colonial kitchen garden holds more mystery than you might expect. \nThis special twilight program is offered just before the park’s October 30th Lantern Tour and provides a unique glimpse into the more mysterious side of historic gardening.

SUMMARY:Fall Lecture Series: Robb K. Haberman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second lecture in our Fall Lecture Series with author Robb K. Haberman\, who will discuss his book\, “James Selkirk’s Revolutionary War.”\nRegister\n“James Selkirk’s Revolutionary War” shares insight into James Selkirk’s memoir. Selkirk wrote about his experiences as a non-commissioned officer in the Continental Army and highlights the daily challenges faced by common soldiers. Though Selkirk died before his memoir could be published\, his writings offer a rare personal perspective on the life of an enlisted soldier during the American Revolution. \nRobb Haberman is a historian of early America who received his doctorate in history from the University of Connecticut. Robb has held visiting lectureships at Trinity College in Hartford and Colby College in Maine and currently serves as an adjunct assistant professor in the History Department at Fordham University. His work on politics\, media\, and memory in Revolutionary- era New York has appeared in several print and online publications\, including the peer-reviewed journals New York History\, Early American Studies\, and American Periodicals. Robb also worked for seven years at Columbia University as an associate editor for the John Jay Papers. During this period\, Robb helped produce volumes four through seven of The Selected Papers of John Jay\, which were published by the University of Virginia Press and which also appear on Founders Online\, a free and open-access database created by the National Archives. Robb’s current book is entitled James Selkirk’s Revolutionary War: The Memoir of a Continental Sergeant. This work examines the wartime experiences of a Scottish immigrant who came to New York in 1774\, served over seven years in the Continental Army\, and then authored an account of his military service. For his work on the Selkirk memoir\, Robb has received fellowships from the American Philosophical Society and the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati.\nLectures will begin at 6 PM at the Old Barracks Museum\, followed by a Q&A and book signing.
