SUMMARY:Lecture – The Doans and The Revolution
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 7 at 1:30 PM\, Washington Crossing Historic Park welcomes curators Annie Halliday and Clint Flack from the Mercer Museum to discuss the notorious Doan gang\, their background\, and activities early in the revolution. The Doan gang was a group of British loyalists\, the most notorious members being five brothers and one cousin from the Doan family of Plumstead. The gang was composed of around 30 members who were accused murderers\, attainted traitors\, horse thieves\, and ferried British prisoners of war to British lines. They were also guilty of robbing tax collectors\, their most famous crime being the theft of the Bucks County treasury in 1781. \nThis 45 minute lecture focuses on the Doan gang and their activities during the American Revolution. Events covered include the Loyalist raid of the Bird in the Hand and the Battle of Crooked Billet. This lecture is based entirely on contemporary records including court documents\, eyewitness accounts\, and newspaper appearances. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. Registration is required on the DCNR website. Click here to register.

SUMMARY:SAR Saturday Book Talk Breakfast@Maidenhead
DESCRIPTION:Princeton Chapter\, New Jersey Society\, Sons of the American Revolution ‘Bring Your Own Breakfast’ Gathering \nSaturday\, April 8th\, 8:30 to 10:30 AM \nPresbyterian Church of Lawrenceville Chapel  2688 Main Street\, Lawrenceville\, NJ 08648 (click here for the map) \nGuest Speaker: Jim Stempel\, author of THE ENEMY HARASSED: Washington’s New Jersey Campaign of 1777.  \nAll are welcome\, but space will be limited.  You can purchase the book in advance. Click here to register. \nAs few books regarding American history have achieved\, Jim Stempel’s The Enemy Harassed brings a previously neglected period of the American Revolution to life. In late December 1776\, the American War of Independence appeared to be on its last legs. General George Washington’s continental forces had been reduced to a shadow of their former strength\, the British Army had chased them across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania\, and enlistments for many of the rank and file would be up by month’s end. Desperate times call for desperate measures\, however\, and George Washington responded to this crisis with astonishing audacity. On Christmas night 1776\, he recrossed the Delaware as a nor’easter churned up the coast\, burying his small detachment under howling sheets of snow and ice. Undaunted\, they attacked a Hessian brigade at Trenton\, New Jersey\, taking the German auxiliaries by complete surprise. Then\, only three days later\, Washington struck again\, crossing the Delaware\, slipping away from the British at Trenton\, and attacking the Redcoats at Princeton—to their utter astonishment. \nThe British\, now back on their heels\, retreated toward New Brunswick as Washington’s reinvigorated force followed them north into Jersey. Over the next eight months\, Washington’s continentals and the state militias of New Jersey would go head-to-head with the British in a multitude of small-scale actions and large-scale battles\, eventually forcing the British to flea New Jersey by sea. In this captivating narrative of the American War of Independence\, author Jim Stempel brings to life one of the most violent\, courageous\, yet virtually forgotten periods of the Revolutionary War. Sure to enthrall professional historians and book lovers of all stripes\, The Enemy Harassed is scholarly history presented in an accessible style anyone can enjoy. \nAfter his talk\, the author will sign copies of his books.   \nBring your own coffee and nosh for breakfast. There is a Starbucks and the award-winning Gingered Peach Bakery across the street. We thank the Presbyterian Church for donating the space. We will pass the plate for donations to the church.  All are welcome\, but space will be limited.  You can purchase the book in advance. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Lecture – ‘She Had a Husband in the Camp’: Following the Army During the War for Independence
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 19 at 1:30 PM\, join Carrie Fellows\, Executive Director of the Hunterdon County (NJ) Cultural & Heritage Commission as she examines the life of the women who followed the Continental Army during the revolution. Through glimpses found in period references\, writings\, and images\, this talk will explore the reasons why women left reasonably secure situations for the uncertainty of following the army. It will describe some of the duties women performed and how they were compensated for them once they were “on the rolls.” How has popular culture portrayed women in this situation\, and how have those portrayals stood up to what the records reflect? If you’re interested in learning more about portraying an ancestor for the upcoming Semiquincentennial\, this presentation will give you a place to begin. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. It will also be live-streamed on Zoom. Log-in information will be sent following registration. Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance. Click here to register on the DCNR website.
