SUMMARY:Lecture – “German Soldier\, American Rebel: Christopher Ludwick’s Pursuits of Happiness in Revolutionary Pennsylvania”
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThis is a hybrid event.  Visitors may attend in-person in the Visitor Center Auditorium or virtually on Zoom.  Registration is required.  Log-in information provided with registration. Register Here \nHessian-born Christopher Ludwick was already a veteran of European warfare and an experienced mariner by the time he washed ashore in British Philadelphia in 1755. A skilled baker\, he made that city his permanent home and\, through private frugality and industriousness\, realized great wealth and community status. When imperial politics thrust the British Empire into revolution\, however\, Ludwick became a dedicated supporter of America’s glorious cause. He ultimately dedicated the rest of his life to fighting oppression\, as his crusade continued beyond Yorktown. Indeed\, his efforts to help others continued posthumously\, beyond even the crushing silence of the grave. \nShawn David McGhee (PhD\, Temple University) is a political historian of eighteenth-century British North America and author of No Longer Subjects of the British King: The Political Transformation of Royal Subjects to Republican Citizens\, 1774-1776 (Yardley\, PA: Westholme\, 2024)

SUMMARY:Living History Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:  \nCelebrate Independence Day by bringing the whole family back in time—to July 4\, 1776!\nAt Washington Crossing Historic Park\, you can watch living historians demonstrate their crafts and see a military encampment from noon to 4 PM on July 4th. A highlight of the day will be readings of the Declaration of Independence at 12:30 PM\, 1:30 PM\, 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM. \nAdditionally\, join historian and author David Price at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM as he explores the iconic “Ten Crucial Days” winter campaign of 1776-77\, a defining moment in the American Revolution. David presents a thematic analysis of the campaign\, focusing on five key factors that played a pivotal role in shaping its outcome: leadership\, geography\, weather\, artillery\, and contingency. Rather than offering a traditional chronological account\, David examines how these overlapping elements combined to thwart British plans at a critical juncture in the war\, enabling George Washington’s army to achieve a series of pivotal victories and turn the tide of the Revolution. \nDavid offers a fresh perspective on this legendary campaign\, drawing from his latest book\, Winning the Ten Crucial Days: The Keys to Victory in George Washington’s Legendary Winter Campaign. Renowned historians have praised the work for its insightful analysis and unique approach. This event provides an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how these five factors worked in concert to transform the course of American history. David has produced multiple books and scholarly articles relating to the War of Independence\, and his work has earned numerous accolades\, including recognition from the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Don’t miss this engaging and thought-provoking discussion of one of the most critical moments in the Revolutionary War. \nLocal Harvest Pizza and Rita’s Water Ice will be on-site. \nThe Friends of Washington Crossing Park also operate a concession stand serving hot dogs\, chips\, and beverages. Proceeds from the stand help support the Friends’ educational programming at the park. Food donated by Colonial Farms\, Dietz & Watson\, Herr’s\, Bimbo Bakeries\, and Wawa help us provide affordable food options for our visitors and refreshments for our volunteers. We are deeply grateful for their generous support. \nTickets are $9 for adults age 12 and over; $5 for children ages 5-11; and free for those under 5\, active-duty military\, and members of the Friends of Washington Crossing Park. Families with up to two adults and two children living in the same household can purchase a single-family ticket for $25. \nPre-registration is recommended. Admission to Bowman’s Hill Tower is included in your ticket to Living History Day. \n
