SUMMARY:In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER:\nPlease join us for a special film and conversation examining how Philadelphia’s past and present continue to shape the American story. \nEpisode 2 Overview: Land (1700–1763)\nEpisode 2 of In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America explores how land became both promise and pressure in colonial Pennsylvania. As religious freedom draws waves of immigrants to Philadelphia’s port\, the colony’s growth depends on one critical condition: land must be sold to sustain settlement and repay mounting debts. Yet much of that land has not been formally acquired from Lenape sachems through treaty. \nAs economic strain intensifies\, the episode examines how the Penn family—now led by William Penn’s sons—grapples with the moral and political consequences of expansion. Will they uphold their father’s vision of coexistence\, or sacrifice principle for profit? Through film and conversation\, Episode 2 invites audiences to consider how land\, power\, and broken promises shaped Philadelphia—and set enduring patterns in the making of America. \n** Please sign-up to reserve your spot at this link. \n

SUMMARY:In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER:\nPlease join us for a film and conversation examining how Philadelphia’s past and present continue to shape the American story: \nEpisode 1 of In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America examines the earliest foundations of freedom in the region that would become Philadelphia. Long before the city’s founding\, the Lenape\, known as the “the Original People\,” lived at liberty along the forests and inlets of the mid-Atlantic coast. Their way of life was profoundly disrupted by decades of European encroachment\, displacement\, and disease. \nThe episode then turns to the arrival of Quaker visionary William Penn\, whose pursuit of religious freedom promised coexistence and tolerance. Yet in a colony already entangled with slavery\, this program asks a critical question: could ideals of freedom truly take root in compromised soil? \nThrough film and conversation\, Episode 1 invites audiences to reconsider how America’s earliest freedoms were imagined and who they were never meant to include.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “Nobody Men: Neutrality\, Loyalties\, and Family in the American Revolution”
DESCRIPTION:Washington Crossing Historic Park is pleased to partner with the David Center for the American Revolution at the American Philosophical Society to host a lecture by historian Travis Glasson on his new book\, Nobody Men: Neutrality\, Loyalties\, and Family in the American Revolution (Yale University Press\, 2025). \nWhile the American Revolution is often told as a struggle between Patriots and Loyalists\, at least one-third of the colonial population remained neutral. In this lecture\, Glasson explores the experiences of the Cruger family\, a transatlantic merchant family whose members navigated the war by prioritizing peace and personal survival over political allegiance. Their story reveals the complex choices faced by those who lived “in the middle” during a violent civil war and sheds new light on how revolutionary societies were shaped. \nDrawing on extensive research in the United States and Britain\, Nobody Men offers a powerful and human portrait of neutrality\, family loyalty\, and political uncertainty during the founding of the nation. \nThis lecture will be offered in a hybrid format\, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available. Pre-registration is required for all participants.\n  \n \nAbout the Speaker\nTravis Glasson is Associate Professor of History at Temple University and an Affiliated Faculty member of Temple’s Global Studies Program. He received his MA and PhD from Columbia University and his BA from the College of the Holy Cross. \nHis previous book\, Mastering Christianity: Missionary Anglicanism and Slavery in the Atlantic World (Oxford University Press\, 2012)\, examined the role of Anglican missionaries in shaping debates over slavery and human difference in the Atlantic world. His work has appeared in journals including the William and Mary Quarterly and the Journal of British Studies. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has received fellowships from institutions including the John Carter Brown Library\, the Huntington Library\, and the University of Cambridge.
