SUMMARY:Monthly Living History August 2025
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us each month as historical interpreters and reenactors bring a piece of history to life at Washington Crossing Historic Park. Each month’s program will run from 11-3\, and will cover various aspects on military life during the American Revolution. The programs will take place on the 2nd Saturday of each month April – September. There is no admission or registration\, all you have to do is show up and be ready to learn something new! \n  \nThis month’s program will feature artillery! Cannon were an integral part of the forces of both sides of the revolution\, providing fire support to the infantry\, and able to bombard fixed positions and ships. Our reenactors will be drilling with and maintaining their pieces\, and will discuss the role of artillery\, how it was worked and moved\, and why the Continental relied upon Artillery for its success.

SUMMARY:Stream Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Stream Ecology will dive into the world of macroinvertebrates within the south branch of Steele Run right here in Washington Crossing State Park. Dragonfly nymphs\, water bugs\, small fish\, and amphibians all call small streams home. Other wildlife will also be highlighted. This outing will involve about a mile of walking total including uneven terrain at times. Dip nets and other collection tools will be provided.  \nMeet Washington Crossing State Park naturalist Joe Moore in the Knox Grove Playground Area at 10am with sturdy shoes and plenty of drinking water. Appropriate for ages 3 & up. This is a FREE event.

Here is your chance to try some of their toys.  \n\n\nTry to catch the ball in the cup. \n\n\nPut a challenging jigsaw puzzle together.  \n\n\nSee reproduction dolls clothed in 18th century styles from England\, and from Bethlehem PA.  \n\n\nMost exciting\, children will be able to blow soap bubbles 18th-century style\, as illustrated in several period paintings! \n\n\nClarissa will be a part of the Outwater’s Militia Revolutionary War Encampment at Washington Crossing State Park. Come and see the soldiers drill in preparation for action against his majesty’s troops. Stroll through the encampment when the soldiers are not drilling and learn about the life and times of the Revolutionary War!

DESCRIPTION:This program will teach some of the early history of dentistry\, including prominent dentists and procedures\, some of the instruments and medicines used\, new innovations and prosthetics\, and\, of course\, Washington’s dental history. \nThe discussion will be simple enough for everyone\, but those in the dental field are welcome to ask more technical questions at the end of the program.  Everyone will come away with something they didn’t know beforehand! \nMarjy Wienkop was a dental technician for 20 years\, and a dental assistant for four more.  She is a medical and dental historian of the 18th and 19th centuries\, and portrays a military surgeon in both Revolutionary War and Civil War\, an 18th century civilian physician\, and an 18th century chirurgeon-dentist.

In the 18th Century much of Bucks County was cultivated farmland\, with a wide variety of activities required to keep them running. From Animal care\, to structure maintenance\, to harvesting and preserving\, each of these programs at the Thompson-Neely Farmstead will cover a different set of tasks that would be performed on the farm\, so that you can see and experience what life was like for many people in the years surrounding the Revolution \n  \nAugust’s program will have demonstrators shepherding our flock of sheep\, including taking care of them\, and also processing their wool into useable yarn that can be made into clothing and other useful items.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Washington Crossing Park Association (WCPA) Conservation Crew for a forest restoration project along the historic Continental Lane trail. Participants will briefly learn about how invasive species are impacting New Jersey’s forests. Then we’ll get to work removing invasive plants to support the restoration of this important ecosystem! \n📍 Location: Meet us at the small parking lot on the left\, just past the State Park’s main entrance. \nNo experience necessary. Dress for the weather. Bring work gloves and loppers or a shovel if you have them. We will provide extra gloves and tools.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “Environmental Legacies: How the War of Independence Affected the Natural World in Predictable and Surprising Ways”
DESCRIPTION:Join Juniata College Professor Dave Hsiung for his presentation of how the revolutionary war impacted the natural world. Dr. David Hsiung is the Dr. Charles R. and Shirley A. Knox Professor of History at Juniata College\, where he has taught since earning his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and his B.A. from Yale. A dedicated teacher and scholar\, he has received multiple honors for excellence in the classroom\, including Juniata’s Beachley Award for Distinguished Teaching and Pennsylvania’s “Professor of the Year” from the Carnegie Foundation. His research spans Appalachian history\, environmental perspectives on the American Revolution\, and interdisciplinary collaborations with students that bring history to life through hands-on experimentation and exploration. \nThe War of Independence affected the natural world in important and lasting ways. The lecture will examine deforestation at Valley Forge; raids that seized animals but also produced some surprisingly “positive” effects; and lead musket balls left on battlefields that may only now be poisoning the land. This talk offers not only new ways to think about the Revolution\, but also war and the environment today. \n\n\n\nRegister Here!

DESCRIPTION:Join us each month as historical interpreters and reenactors bring a piece of history to life at Washington Crossing Historic Park. Each month’s program will run from 11-3\, and will cover various aspects on military life during the American Revolution. The programs will take place on the 2nd Saturday of each month April – September. There is no admission or registration\, all you have to do is show up and be ready to learn something new! \n  \nSeptember’s program will feature Supplies! The Continental army was infamously short of supplies of all sorts\, food\, ammunition\, weapons\, etc. Learn about how various normally civilian trades and industries re-oriented themselves to supply the army during the war and see demonstrations of those trades in action.

Washington Crossing State Park is uniquely situated to host an influx of migratory bird species as they use the Delaware River as a “migration super highway”.  Join Washington Crossing State Park naturalist Joe Moore outside the Nature Center at 8am to begin the morning. This outing will include between 2 and 3 miles of walking the accessible pathways of the park. Please bring water\, wear sturdy hiking shoes\, and bring binoculars or a camera if you have them!  \nGreat for all ages and levels of birding ability. New to birding?
