SUMMARY:Wheat and Sheep Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, April 18\, 2026\, from 10 AM to 4 PM as we welcome spring at Washington Crossing Historic Park with a day of hands-on history and family fun at the Thompson-Neely Farmstead. This special event invites visitors to explore how wheat and wool were essential parts of daily life in early America through interactive demonstrations\, historic tours\, and engaging activities for all ages. \nThroughout the day\, enjoy traditional hand shearing demonstrations\, tour the historic grist mill\, and learn how raw materials like fleece and grain were transformed into everyday necessities during the colonial period. \nVisitors will also have the opportunity to tour the Thompson-Neely House\, recently renovated with a new exhibit unveiled in 2025\, for the 250th anniversary\, making this a perfect time to come back for a visit. \nSheep Shearing Demonstrations\nSheep-shearing demonstrations will take place hourly beginning at 10 AM. Visitors can observe traditional hand-shearing techniques\, learn about historic farming practices\, and meet the Thompson-Neely sheep. Full Shearing Schedule: \n\n\n\n10:00 – Alex\n11:00 – Inky\n12:00 – Hannah\n1:00 – Robert\n2:00 – Nathanael\n3:00 – Rusty\n\n\n\nHistoric Grist Mill Tours\nTours of the Thompson-Neely Grist Mill will be offered on the half hour from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Visitors will learn how water-powered mills worked\, why they were essential to 18th-century life\, and how this particular mill supported the Thompson-Neely farm and helped provide food for Washington’s army during the December 1776 encampment. \nMeet The Flock\nMeet the sheep who make Wheat & Sheep Day so special! Throughout the day\, you’ll have the chance to meet the members of our historic flock. Each sheep has its own personality and plays a part in bringing history to life at the Thompson-Neely Farmstead. If you feel a connection to one of our wooly residents\, you’re welcome to sponsor a sheep and help support their ongoing care. It’s a meaningful way to stay connected to the flock long after your visit. \nDon’t Miss Out!\nPre-registration is required and this “pay what you wish” event is limited to 150 people total; the recommended fee is $10 per person.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “Coffee Nation: How One Commodity Transformed the Early United States”
DESCRIPTION:Washington Crossing Historic Park is pleased to host a lecture by Dr. Michelle Craig McDonald on her new book\, “Coffee Nation: How One Commodity Transformed the Early United States”. \nIn this fascinating talk\, McDonald discusses her book exploring how coffee became central to daily life in colonial America and how coffeehouses emerged as lively hubs for news\, debate\, and revolutionary ideas. Drawing on the rich collections of the American Philosophical Society\, she connects global trade networks to everyday life in Pennsylvania\, from Philadelphia’s role as a major international port to the labor systems that supported the coffee trade\, including the work of women and the reliance on enslaved people. \nThis lecture will be offered in a hybrid format\, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available. Pre-registration is required for all participants. \nThe Friends of Washington Crossing Park’s free lecture series is made possible by our General Level Supporter\, America250PA\, through the Lecture250 Grant Program.

SUMMARY:In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER:\nPlease join us for a special film and conversation examining how Philadelphia’s past and present continue to shape the American story. \nEpisode 2 Overview: Land (1700–1763)\nEpisode 2 of In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America explores how land became both promise and pressure in colonial Pennsylvania. As religious freedom draws waves of immigrants to Philadelphia’s port\, the colony’s growth depends on one critical condition: land must be sold to sustain settlement and repay mounting debts. Yet much of that land has not been formally acquired from Lenape sachems through treaty. \nAs economic strain intensifies\, the episode examines how the Penn family—now led by William Penn’s sons—grapples with the moral and political consequences of expansion. Will they uphold their father’s vision of coexistence\, or sacrifice principle for profit? Through film and conversation\, Episode 2 invites audiences to consider how land\, power\, and broken promises shaped Philadelphia—and set enduring patterns in the making of America. \n** Please sign-up to reserve your spot at this link. \n

SUMMARY:In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER:\nPlease join us for a film and conversation examining how Philadelphia’s past and present continue to shape the American story: \nEpisode 1 of In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America examines the earliest foundations of freedom in the region that would become Philadelphia. Long before the city’s founding\, the Lenape\, known as the “the Original People\,” lived at liberty along the forests and inlets of the mid-Atlantic coast. Their way of life was profoundly disrupted by decades of European encroachment\, displacement\, and disease. \nThe episode then turns to the arrival of Quaker visionary William Penn\, whose pursuit of religious freedom promised coexistence and tolerance. Yet in a colony already entangled with slavery\, this program asks a critical question: could ideals of freedom truly take root in compromised soil? \nThrough film and conversation\, Episode 1 invites audiences to reconsider how America’s earliest freedoms were imagined and who they were never meant to include.
