SUMMARY:Spring Clean Up – April 4\, 2020
DESCRIPTION:This Event Has Been Cancelled\nThe Princeton Battlefield Society has been monitoring the current public health emergency taking place. In order to protect our community volunteers\, society members\, and park visitors\, we have determined that cancellation of the April 4th Park Day Clean Up (including the April 18th postponement date) is the best decision for the health and welfare of all involved. We are saddened that we have had to come to this decision\, however the health and safety of the community is the priority. \n\nAs a strong and resilient community\, we have weathered many crises in the past and we thoroughly believe we will rise to the challenge during this one as well. Please take care of your families and friends so that we can slow down and halt the spread of this current illness. \n\nWe will continue to keep you apprised of the Princeton Battlefield Society’s activities and hope that we can hold a Clean Up Day at a later date this year. \n\nOur best wishes go to you and your loved ones. \n  \nSpring Clean up at the Princeton Battlefield\nSaturday\, April 4 – 1:00 – 4:00 pm\nMeet at the Clarke House\n500 Mercer Street\nPrinceton\, NJ 08540 \n(weather postponement date Sat.\, Apr 18th) \n\nNeed some volunteer hours?  Looking for a great Saturday activity? \nJoin the Princeton Battlefield Society for our annual Clean Up Day at Princeton Battlefield State Park on Saturday\, April 4\, 2020 from 1 – 4PM.  In conjunction with the American Battlefield Trust’s National Park Day\, volunteers will gather nationwide to participate in hands-on maintenance and preservation of our country’s historic battlefields.  Come by yourself or bring your family and friends!  People of all ages and abilities are welcome! \nEach registered participant will receive a free T-shirt (while supplies last). SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Lecture: Cole Jones on "The Problem of Prisoners of War in the \nAmerican Revolution"
DESCRIPTION:This event has been POSTPONED – the new date will be announced as soon as\npossible.\nThe Old Barracks is pleased to host lectures and discussions by leading\nhistorians and authors on a variety of subjects sponsored by the Society of\nSons of the Revolution in the State of New Jersey. Lectures are free to\nattend\, and pre-orders for books are encouraged. Pre-orders available soon.\nJoin the Old Barracks Museum on Monday\, April 20 at 7 PM for a lecture by\nT. Cole Jones on his book “The Problem of Prisoners of War in the American\nRevolution.” Doors open at 6:30 PM.\nThis lecture will examine how the founding generation of Americans grappled\nwith the problems of prisoner treatment. During the eight-year conflict\,\nAmerican forces captured over seventeen thousand British and allied\nGermanic soldiers\, as well as thousands more loyalist civilians and British\nmariners. The number of enemy prisoners in American custody often exceeded\nthat of American soldiers in the Continental army. These prisoners proved\nincreasingly burdensome for the new nation as the war progressed. What was\nto become of these men? How should they be confined? Who would pay to house\nand feed them? When and how should they be released? A series of thorny\npolitical issues compounded these logistical difficulties. This talk will\ntake the audience from the meeting rooms of the Continental Congress to the\nprison camps of Virginia\, Maryland\, and Pennsylvania\, revealing the factors\nthat coalesced to transform the conflict into a war for vengeance\,\nescalating its violence precipitously.
