SUMMARY:Fall Lecture Series: Robb K. Haberman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second lecture in our Fall Lecture Series with author Robb K. Haberman\, who will discuss his book\, “James Selkirk’s Revolutionary War.”\nRegister\n“James Selkirk’s Revolutionary War” shares insight into James Selkirk’s memoir. Selkirk wrote about his experiences as a non-commissioned officer in the Continental Army and highlights the daily challenges faced by common soldiers. Though Selkirk died before his memoir could be published\, his writings offer a rare personal perspective on the life of an enlisted soldier during the American Revolution. \nRobb Haberman is a historian of early America who received his doctorate in history from the University of Connecticut. Robb has held visiting lectureships at Trinity College in Hartford and Colby College in Maine and currently serves as an adjunct assistant professor in the History Department at Fordham University. His work on politics\, media\, and memory in Revolutionary- era New York has appeared in several print and online publications\, including the peer-reviewed journals New York History\, Early American Studies\, and American Periodicals. Robb also worked for seven years at Columbia University as an associate editor for the John Jay Papers. During this period\, Robb helped produce volumes four through seven of The Selected Papers of John Jay\, which were published by the University of Virginia Press and which also appear on Founders Online\, a free and open-access database created by the National Archives. Robb’s current book is entitled James Selkirk’s Revolutionary War: The Memoir of a Continental Sergeant. This work examines the wartime experiences of a Scottish immigrant who came to New York in 1774\, served over seven years in the Continental Army\, and then authored an account of his military service. For his work on the Selkirk memoir\, Robb has received fellowships from the American Philosophical Society and the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati.\nLectures will begin at 6 PM at the Old Barracks Museum\, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be available. Copies of these titles are available for purchase in-store or at www.barracks.org. All proceeds go towards supporting the Old Barracks Museum and its mission.\nThank you to our Series Sponsor\, the Society of the Sons of the Revolution in New Jersey\, and our Community Sponsor\, Hunter Research.

SUMMARY:FROM THE WATERWAYS TO THE CROSSING: THE REMARKABLE LIFE AND TIMES OF CAPTAIN DANIEL BRAY
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Bray learned about the Waterways along the Delaware River rising to captain of his own Durham Boat in 1769 at age 19. \nPrior to that he was a Scottish farmer in Baptisttown\, Hunterdon County\, NJ\, where his carpentry skills allowed him to learn how to build Durham Boats at Rodmans. He answered the “Call for Freedom” and joined the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon County NJ Militia\, earning a promotion to captain in 1775. He earned his position in history when General George Washington needed his help along with others to obtain his own fleet of boats. He used them during the Crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas day Dec 25\, 1776 to attack the Hessians in Trenton\, NJ. Later he was promoted to general of the NJ State Militia and participated in the War of 1812. \nJoin us at Washington Crossing State Park’s “Stone Barn” building\, near the Johnson Ferry House. Enjoy a fun educational presentation with costumes\, audience participation\, slides\, lecture\, and handouts. \nBetter “Git On Wit It” and attend!

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe Washington Crossing Historic Park Book Club invites history enthusiasts to explore the American Revolution through engaging discussion and carefully selected readings. Led by the park’s Museum Curator\, Kimberly McCarty\, the club meets virtually via Zoom and focuses on books that shed new light on the Revolutionary era\, with special emphasis on the events surrounding the Delaware River crossing and the 1776 campaign. Free and open to all\, meetings typically take place on the third Monday of each month and provide an opportunity to connect with fellow readers while deepening your understanding of this pivotal period in American history. \nThe fighting prowess of United States Marines is second to none\, but few know of the Corps’ humble beginnings and what it achieved during the early years of the American Revolution. Jason Bohm rectifies this oversight with his eye-opening Washington’s Marines: The Origins of the Corps and the American Revolution\, 1775–1777. \nThe story begins with the oppressive days that drove America into a conflict for which it was ill-prepared\, when thirteen independent colonies commenced a war against the world’s most powerful military with nothing more than local militias\, privateers\, and other ad hoc units. The Continental Congress rushed to form an army and placed George Washington in command\, but soon realized that\, to win its freedom\, America would need men who could fight on the sea and on land. Enter the Marines. Bohm artfully tells the story of the creation of the Continental Marines and the men who led them during the parallel paths followed by the Army and Marines in the opening years of the war and through the early successes and failures at Lexington and Concord\, Bunker Hill\, Canada\, Boston\, Charleston\, and more. \nWashington’s Marines:  The Origins of the Corps and the American Revolution\, 1775-1777 \n\nSeptember 21 – Prologue – Chapter 3\nOctober 19 – Chapters 4-5\nNovember 16- Chapters 6-7\nDecember 21- Chapters 8-9\nJanuary 21- Chapter 10 – Appendix B\n\n
