SUMMARY:Lecture – “Founding Friendship: George Washington\, James Madison\, and the Creation of the American Republic”
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 4 at 1:30 PM\, join Stuart Leibiger as he discusses his book Founding Friendship: George Washington\, James Madison\, and the Creation of the American Republic. Dr. Leibiger analyzes the rise and fall of the friendship and political collaboration between these two Revolutionary Statesmen. After teaming up to help win American Independence\, Washington and Madison cooperated on the framing and ratification of the U.S. Constitution. When Washington took office as first president\, Madison was his right-hand man and confidant\, providing advice on policy and precedents. With the rise of the Federalist and Republican parties\, however\, Washington and Madison gradually drifted apart personally and ideologically\, and eventually ended up as political enemies. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. It will also be live-streamed on Zoom. Log-in information will be sent following registration. Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance. Click here to register on the DCNR website.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “Feeding Washington’s Army: Surviving the Valley Forge Winter of 1778” with Ricardo Herrera
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, June 1 at 7 PM\, Ricardo A. Herrera will discuss his new book\, Feeding Washington’s Army: Surviving the Valley Forge Winter of 1778 (Chapel Hill\, University of North Carolina Press\, 2022) at Washington Crossing Historic Park. \nIn this major new history of the Continental Army’s Grand Forage of 1778\, award-winning military historian Herrera uncovers what daily life was like for soldiers during the darkest and coldest days of the American Revolution: the Valley Forge winter. Here\, the army launched its largest and riskiest operation—not a bloody battle against British forces but a campaign to feed itself and prevent starvation or dispersal during the long encampment. Herrera brings to light the army’s herculean efforts to feed itself\, support local and Continental governments\, and challenge the British Army. \nHighlighting the missteps and triumphs of both General George Washington and his officers as well as ordinary soldiers\, sailors\, and militiamen\, Feeding Washington’s Army moves far beyond oft-told\, heroic\, and mythical tales of Valley Forge and digs deeply into its daily reality\, revealing how close the Continental Army came to succumbing to starvation and how strong and resourceful its soldiers and leaders actually were. \nThe talk will be held in-person at the Visitor Center and will also be livestreamed. Books will be available for purchase and a book signing with the author will be held after the talk. The event is free to attend but registration is required to attend in person and receive the Zoom link. Click here to register. \nThis event is hosted by the David Center for the American Revolution at the American Philosophical Society.

SUMMARY:Lecture – The Doans and The Revolution
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 7 at 1:30 PM\, Washington Crossing Historic Park welcomes curators Annie Halliday and Clint Flack from the Mercer Museum to discuss the notorious Doan gang\, their background\, and activities early in the revolution. The Doan gang was a group of British loyalists\, the most notorious members being five brothers and one cousin from the Doan family of Plumstead. The gang was composed of around 30 members who were accused murderers\, attainted traitors\, horse thieves\, and ferried British prisoners of war to British lines. They were also guilty of robbing tax collectors\, their most famous crime being the theft of the Bucks County treasury in 1781. \nThis 45 minute lecture focuses on the Doan gang and their activities during the American Revolution. Events covered include the Loyalist raid of the Bird in the Hand and the Battle of Crooked Billet. This lecture is based entirely on contemporary records including court documents\, eyewitness accounts\, and newspaper appearances. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. Registration is required on the DCNR website. Click here to register.

SUMMARY:Lecture – ‘She Had a Husband in the Camp’: Following the Army During the War for Independence
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 19 at 1:30 PM\, join Carrie Fellows\, Executive Director of the Hunterdon County (NJ) Cultural & Heritage Commission as she examines the life of the women who followed the Continental Army during the revolution. Through glimpses found in period references\, writings\, and images\, this talk will explore the reasons why women left reasonably secure situations for the uncertainty of following the army. It will describe some of the duties women performed and how they were compensated for them once they were “on the rolls.” How has popular culture portrayed women in this situation\, and how have those portrayals stood up to what the records reflect? If you’re interested in learning more about portraying an ancestor for the upcoming Semiquincentennial\, this presentation will give you a place to begin. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. It will also be live-streamed on Zoom. Log-in information will be sent following registration. Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance. Click here to register on the DCNR website.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “The Compleat Victory: Saratoga and the American Revolution”
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, November 9 from 7 to 8 PM at the Washington Crossing Historic Park Visitor Center for a lecture with Kevin J. Weddle on his book\, The Compleat Victory: Saratoga and the American Revolution. This book is the recipient of the 9th annual \, Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History which is bestowed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in recognition of the best book in the field of military history published in English during the previous calendar year. \nIn the late summer and fall of 1777\, after two years of indecisive fighting on both sides\, the outcome of the American War of Independence hung in the balance. Having successfully expelled the Americans from Canada in 1776\, the British were determined to end the rebellion and devised what they believed a war-winning strategy: sending General John Burgoyne south to rout the Americans and take Albany. When British forces captured Fort Ticonderoga on New York’s Lake Champlain with unexpected ease in July of 1777\, it looked as if it was a matter of time before they would break the rebellion in the North. Less than three and a half months later\, however\, a combination of the Continental Army and militia forces commanded by Major General Horatio Gates and inspired by the heroics of Benedict Arnold\, forced Burgoyne to surrender his entire army. The American victory at Saratoga—described by one general as “the Compleat“—stunned the world and changed the course of the war. In the end\, British plans were undone by a combination of distance\, geography\, logistics\, and an underestimation of American leadership and fighting ability. \nWeddle will discuss some of the key events and themes from this pivotal event in US history based on accounts detailed in his new book\, The Compleat Victory: Saratoga and the American Revolution (Oxford University Press\, 2021). The Chair of the judging committee for the Gilder Lehrman Military History Prize said this of the book: “The object of this prize has been to reward scholarly\, well-written\, accessible and ground-breaking military history\, and the judges had no hesitation in awarding this year’s award to Kevin Weddle’s masterly book. The judges were astonished at the way Weddle kept up the tension throughout\, despite everyone knowing the eventual outcome.” \nThe talk will be held in-person and will also be livestreamed. Books will be available for purchase and a book signing with the author will be held after the talk. The event is free to attend but registration is required. Click here to register. \nThis event is hosted by the David Center for the American Revolution at the American Philosophical Society.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “The Disaffected: Britain’s Occupation of Philadelphia During the American Revolution”
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 18 at 1:30 PM\, join author Aaron Sullivan as he discusses his book The Disaffected. \nHe will explore the British occupation of Philadelphia\, chronicling the experiences of a group of people who were pursued\, pressured\, and at times persecuted\, not because they chose the wrong side of the Revolution but because they tried not to choose a side at all. For these people\, the war was neither a glorious cause to be won nor an unnatural rebellion to be suppressed\, but a dangerous and costly calamity to be navigated with care. Both the Patriots and the British referred to this group as “the disaffected\,” perceiving correctly that their defining feature was less loyalty to than a lack of support for either side in the dispute\, and denounced them as opportunistic\, apathetic\, or even treasonous. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. It will also be live-streamed on Zoom. Log-in information will be sent following registration. Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance. Register on the DCNR website.

SUMMARY:Memorial Day Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Washington Crossing Historic Park will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday\, May 29 at 1 PM at the gravesite of Continental soldiers located near the Thompson-Neely House. \nThe observation will include a colonial color guard\, fife and drum music\, Revolutionary War reenactors\, veterans\, and other honored guests – with the keynote address being given by USAF veteran Frank Lyons. At the ceremony\, the Daughters of the American Revolution will dedicate a plaque at the original gravesite of 24-year-old Captain-Lieutenant James Moore. Moore served in Captain Alexander Hamilton’s New York Artillery Unit before his death December 25\, 1776. \nAfter the dedication\, American flags will be placed on the graves. The gravesite marks the resting place of soldiers who died during the Continental army’s December 1776 encampment in Bucks County. Although no Americans were killed during the Delaware River crossing and the First Battle of Trenton\, some soldiers succumbed to exposure\, disease or previous injuries. Captain-Lieutenant Moore is the only veteran buried in this plot whose identity is known. \nAlso in attendance will be representatives of the modern US Army artillery unit that shares its lineage with the New York Artillery Regiment of 1776\, the 1st Battalion 5th Field Artillery “Hamilton’s Own.” 1st Lieutenant Colin Alexander and Sergeant 1st Class Roger Siewert will be representing their unit at the ceremony.

DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, May 24 at 7 PM\, author Brendan McConville will visit Washington Crossing Historic Park to discuss his book\, The Brethren: A Story of Faith and Conspiracy in Revolutionary America. \nLess than a year into the American Revolution\, a group of North Carolina farmers hatched a plot to assassinate the colony’s leading patriots\, including the governor. The scheme became known as the Gourd Patch or Lewellen Conspiracy. The men called themselves the Brethren. McConville’s The Brethren (Harvard University Press\, 2021) tells the dramatic story of ordinary people who came to fear that their Revolutionary leaders were trying to undermine religious freedom and individual liberty—the very causes now ascribed to the Founding generation. \nBrendan McConville has written several books on early American history\, including The King’s Three Faces: The Rise and Fall of Royal America\, 1688–1766. Professor of History at Boston University\, he is co-chair of the David Center for the Study of the American Revolution at the American Philosophical Society and cohost of the Boston-area radio program The Historians. \nThis event will be held in-person at the Washington Crossing Historic Park Visitors Center and is hosted by the David Center for the American Revolution at the American Philosophical Society. Registration is required. To learn more and register\, please click here.

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED Lecture – ‘She Had a Husband in the Camp’: Following the Army during the War for Independence
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED FROM MARCH 27. If you have already registered for the rescheduled lecture on May 22\, you do not have to do so again. \nOn Sunday\, May 22 at 1:30 PM\, join Carrie Fellows\, Executive Director of the Hunterdon County (NJ) Cultural & Heritage Commission as she examines the life of the women who followed the Continental Army during the revolution. \nThrough glimpses found in period references\, writings\, and images\, this talk will explore the reasons why women left reasonably secure situations for the uncertainty of following the army. It will describe some of the duties women performed and how they were compensated for them once they were “on the rolls”. How has popular culture portrayed women in this situation\, and how have those portrayals stood up to what the records reflect? If you’re interested in learning more about portraying an ancestor for the upcoming Semiquincentennial\, this presentation will give you a place to begin. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. It will also be live-streamed on Zoom. Log-in information will be sent following registration. Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance as space is limited. Click here to register on the DCNR website.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “Surviving The Winters”
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 1 at 1:30 PM\, join author Steven Elliott as he discusses his book Surviving the Winters: Housing Washington’s Army During the American Revolution. \nWashington’s troops spent only a few days a year in combat. The rest of the time\, especially in the winter months\, they were engaged in a different sort of battle—against the elements\, unfriendly terrain\, disease\, and hunger. Victory in that more sustained struggle depended on a mastery of camp construction\, logistics\, and health and hygiene—the components that Elliott considers in his environmental\, administrative\, and operational investigation of the winter encampments at Middlebrook\, Morristown\, West Point\, New Windsor\, and Valley Forge. Documenting the growth of Washington and his subordinates as military administrators\, Surviving the Winters offers a telling new perspective on the commander’s generalship during the Revolutionary War. \nThis event will be held in-person in the Visitor Center. It will also be live-streamed on Zoom. Log-in information will be sent following registration. Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance.
