SUMMARY:Hibbs House Garden Tours – June 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join Washington Crossing Historic Park’s Historical Horticulturist\, Anna Davis\, for a guided walk through the working garden that supports the park’s interpretation of colonial life. \nDuring this 45-minute tour\, visitors will explore the seasonal herbs\, vegetables\, flowers\, and dye plants that would have been commonly grown in American kitchen gardens of the 1700s. Learn how these plants were used for food\, textiles\, and everyday remedies while discovering how historians and gardeners reconstruct historic landscapes using period sources. \nAlong the way\, Anna will share stories about early American gardening practices\, heirloom plant varieties\, and the role gardens played in the daily life of families living along the Delaware River during the Revolutionary era.\nThis tour is part of Farmstead Friday programming and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the research\, cultivation\, and care that bring this historic garden to life. \n

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Family: The Biddles & American Independence
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Washington Crossing Park and Andalusia Historic House\, Gardens & Arboretum are excited to partner on a special program highlighting Andalusia’s upcoming exhibition\, Revolutionary Family: The Biddles & American Independence. \nAndalusia Historic House\, Gardens & Arboretum is a 50-acre site located on the Delaware River in Bensalem\, Pennsylvania. Andalusia was first established in 1795 by Philadelphia merchant John Craig\, and later expanded into a Greek Revival estate by his son-in-law Nicholas Biddle in the nineteenth century. Today\, Andalusia stewards the Biddle family’s history and legacy through tours of its historic house museum and access to its spectacular gardens. \nTimed to coincide with the nation’s semiquincentennial\, “Revolutionary Family: The Biddles & American Independence” presents historic objects\, artwork\, and manuscripts to explore the influential roles that Biddle family members played during the Revolution\, as well as wartime activities near the pre-Andalusia site. The exhibition\, on display in Andalusia’s second-floor exhibition gallery\, will run from March 30 through November 13\, 2026. Visit Andalusia’s website for more information on this upcoming exhibit. \nAndalusia has created four short-format documentary videos that feature a variety of guest experts and Andalusia’s Executive Director John Vick and Research Assistant Brie Stoltzfus to illuminate the experiences of nine Revolutionary-era Biddle family members. SUMMARY:Lecture – “The Writing of the Declaration and What It Meant in 1776″
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Washington Crossing Park (FWCP) has been awarded a $15\,000 grant through America250PA’s Lecture250 Series to support their upcoming presentation\, “The Writing of the Declaration and What It Meant in 1776”. The funding will help Washington Crossing Historic Park offer this signature lecture and support the other free public lectures presented at the park throughout the year\, exploring the people\, ideas\, and events that shaped our Commonwealth and the nation. \nDr. Emily Sneff’s new book\, When the Declaration of Independence Was News\, examines how the Declaration was disseminated\, interpreted\, and remembered in Pennsylvania and across the Atlantic world in 1776. Sneff\, a consulting curator for national exhibitions commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, holds a Ph.D. in History from William & Mary and will be on a national book tour in advance of the 2026 anniversary. \nRather than viewing the Declaration through the lens of hindsight\, this program examines the document at the moment of its creation in 1776\, when its legacy was uncertain and the outcome of the war against Great Britain remained unknown. Dr. Sneff explores how the Declaration was printed\, translated\, and circulated across the emerging nation and throughout the Atlantic world\, highlighting the many individuals involved in declaring independence\, from printers and soldiers to diplomats and translators. The lecture will also consider the Declaration’s enduring relevance in civic life today. \nFollowing the talk\, a living history component featuring historical reenactors will complement the program with interactive interpretation and a moderated audience Q&A. \nAttendees will receive a complimentary commemorative America250 pin and will have the opportunity to meet the author. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. \n\nThis free lecture is made possible by our General Level Supporter\, America250PA\, through the Lecture250 Grant Program.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “Coffee Nation: How One Commodity Transformed the Early United States”
DESCRIPTION:Washington Crossing Historic Park is pleased to host a lecture by Dr. Michelle Craig McDonald on her new book\, “Coffee Nation: How One Commodity Transformed the Early United States”. \nIn this fascinating talk\, McDonald discusses her book exploring how coffee became central to daily life in colonial America and how coffeehouses emerged as lively hubs for news\, debate\, and revolutionary ideas. Drawing on the rich collections of the American Philosophical Society\, she connects global trade networks to everyday life in Pennsylvania\, from Philadelphia’s role as a major international port to the labor systems that supported the coffee trade\, including the work of women and the reliance on enslaved people. \nThis lecture will be offered in a hybrid format\, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available. Pre-registration is required for all participants. \nThe Friends of Washington Crossing Park’s free lecture series is made possible by our General Level Supporter\, America250PA\, through the Lecture250 Grant Program.

SUMMARY:Lecture – “Nobody Men: Neutrality\, Loyalties\, and Family in the American Revolution”
DESCRIPTION:Washington Crossing Historic Park is pleased to partner with the David Center for the American Revolution at the American Philosophical Society to host a lecture by historian Travis Glasson on his new book\, Nobody Men: Neutrality\, Loyalties\, and Family in the American Revolution (Yale University Press\, 2025). \nWhile the American Revolution is often told as a struggle between Patriots and Loyalists\, at least one-third of the colonial population remained neutral. In this lecture\, Glasson explores the experiences of the Cruger family\, a transatlantic merchant family whose members navigated the war by prioritizing peace and personal survival over political allegiance. Their story reveals the complex choices faced by those who lived “in the middle” during a violent civil war and sheds new light on how revolutionary societies were shaped. \nDrawing on extensive research in the United States and Britain\, Nobody Men offers a powerful and human portrait of neutrality\, family loyalty\, and political uncertainty during the founding of the nation. \nThis lecture will be offered in a hybrid format\, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available. Pre-registration is required for all participants.\n  \n \nAbout the Speaker\nTravis Glasson is Associate Professor of History at Temple University and an Affiliated Faculty member of Temple’s Global Studies Program. He received his MA and PhD from Columbia University and his BA from the College of the Holy Cross. \nHis previous book\, Mastering Christianity: Missionary Anglicanism and Slavery in the Atlantic World (Oxford University Press\, 2012)\, examined the role of Anglican missionaries in shaping debates over slavery and human difference in the Atlantic world. His work has appeared in journals including the William and Mary Quarterly and the Journal of British Studies. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has received fellowships from institutions including the John Carter Brown Library\, the Huntington Library\, and the University of Cambridge.

SUMMARY:Ten Crucial Days Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Traversing the Ten Crucial Days Bus Tour begins and ends at Washington Crossing\, PA. Guests spend the day retracing the December 25 crossing of the Delaware and the December 26\, 1776 through January 3\, 1777 American and British military engagements at Trenton\, Princeton and areas in-between. \nHistorical interpreters Roger Williams and Larry Kidder will tell the remarkable story of these ten days that breathed crucial new life into the apparently expiring American Revolution. The events are discussed in the context of the local\, strategically important central New Jersey towns\, villages\, and farms. These locales were occupied by people of diverse backgrounds; with varying religious practices such as Quaker\, Presbyterian\, and Anglican; and with complex views on loyalty to the Revolution or the King. \nHear how the terrain\, weaponry and weather influenced the ways the battles were fought and how the lives of the local people were disrupted by them. See where armies marched\, fought and struggled to survive on an otherwise peaceful landscape\, while the course of human history hung in the balance. \nThe next public bus tours will be offered on December 13th and December 26th\, 2025 and January 3rd and January 16th 2026. Tours last from 9 AM to 4 PM. \nCost is $155 per person and includes bus fare\, boxed lunch\, and donations to Washington Crossing Historic Park\, The Washington Crossing Park Association in New Jersey\, The Old Barracks Museum in Trenton and the Princeton Battlefield Society. \n  \nJanuary 16

\n  \nDecember 26

SUMMARY:David Center Lecture – “The Painter’s Fire: A Forgotten History of the Artists Who Championed the American Revolution”
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis Lecture is hosted at Washington Crossing Historic Park in partnership with the David Center at the American Philosophical Society \n  \nThe war that we now call the American Revolution was not only fought in the colonies with muskets and bayonets. On both sides of the Atlantic\, artists armed with paint\, canvas\, and wax played an integral role in forging revolutionary ideals. Zara Anishanslin charts the intertwined lives of three such figures who dared to defy the British monarchy: Robert Edge Pine\, Prince Demah\, and Patience Wright. From London to Boston\, from Jamaica to Paris\, from Bath to Philadelphia\, these largely forgotten patriots boldly risked their reputations and their lives to declare independence. \nMostly excluded from formal political or military power\, these artists and their circles fired salvos against the king on the walls of the Royal Academy as well as on the battlefields of North America. They used their talents to inspire rebellion\, define American patriotism\, and fashion a new political culture\, often alongside more familiar revolutionary figures such as Benjamin Franklin and Phillis Wheatley. Pine\, an award-winning British artist rumored to be of African descent\, infused massive history paintings with politics and eventually emigrated to the young United States. Demah\, the first identifiable enslaved portrait painter in America\, was Pine’s pupil in London before self-emancipating and enlisting to fight for the Patriot cause. And Wright\, a Long Island–born wax sculptor who became a sensation in London\, loudly advocated for revolution while acting as an informal patriot spy. \nIlluminating a transatlantic and cosmopolitan world of revolutionary fervor\, The Painter’s Fire reveals an extraordinary cohort whose experiences testify to both the promise and the limits of liberty in the founding era. \nTo Register for the lecture please register on the APA’s website; \n

SUMMARY:Lecture – “The Great New York Fire of 1776: A Lost Story of the American Revolution”
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThis is a hybrid event.  Visitors may attend in-person in the Visitor Center Auditorium or virtually on Zoom.  Registration is required.  Log-in information provided with registration.  \nBenjamin Carp will discuss his book The Great New York Fire of 1776: A Lost Story of the American Revolution. \n  \nNew York City\, the strategic center of the Revolutionary War\, was the most important place in North America in 1776. That summer\, an unruly rebel army under George Washington repeatedly threatened to burn the city rather than let the British take it. Shortly after the Crown’s forces took New York City\, much of it mysteriously burned to the ground. \nThis is the first book to fully explore the Great Fire of 1776 and why its origins remained a mystery even after the British investigated it in 1776 and 1783. Uncovering stories of espionage\, terror\, and radicalism\, Benjamin L. Carp paints a vivid picture of the chaos\, passions\, and unresolved tragedies that define a historical moment we usually associate with “life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness.” \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Lecture – “Environmental Legacies: How the War of Independence Affected the Natural World in Predictable and Surprising Ways”
DESCRIPTION:Join Juniata College Professor Dave Hsiung for his presentation of how the revolutionary war impacted the natural world. Dr. David Hsiung is the Dr. Charles R. and Shirley A. Knox Professor of History at Juniata College\, where he has taught since earning his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and his B.A. from Yale. A dedicated teacher and scholar\, he has received multiple honors for excellence in the classroom\, including Juniata’s Beachley Award for Distinguished Teaching and Pennsylvania’s “Professor of the Year” from the Carnegie Foundation. His research spans Appalachian history\, environmental perspectives on the American Revolution\, and interdisciplinary collaborations with students that bring history to life through hands-on experimentation and exploration. \nThe War of Independence affected the natural world in important and lasting ways. The lecture will examine deforestation at Valley Forge; raids that seized animals but also produced some surprisingly “positive” effects; and lead musket balls left on battlefields that may only now be poisoning the land. This talk offers not only new ways to think about the Revolution\, but also war and the environment today. \n\n\n\nRegister Here!

DESCRIPTION:  \nCelebrate Independence Day by bringing the whole family back in time—to July 4\, 1776!\nAt Washington Crossing Historic Park\, you can watch living historians demonstrate their crafts and see a military encampment from noon to 4 PM on July 4th. A highlight of the day will be readings of the Declaration of Independence at 12:30 PM\, 1:30 PM\, 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM. \nAdditionally\, join historian and author David Price at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM as he explores the iconic “Ten Crucial Days” winter campaign of 1776-77\, a defining moment in the American Revolution. David presents a thematic analysis of the campaign\, focusing on five key factors that played a pivotal role in shaping its outcome: leadership\, geography\, weather\, artillery\, and contingency. Rather than offering a traditional chronological account\, David examines how these overlapping elements combined to thwart British plans at a critical juncture in the war\, enabling George Washington’s army to achieve a series of pivotal victories and turn the tide of the Revolution. \nDavid offers a fresh perspective on this legendary campaign\, drawing from his latest book\, Winning the Ten Crucial Days: The Keys to Victory in George Washington’s Legendary Winter Campaign. Renowned historians have praised the work for its insightful analysis and unique approach. This event provides an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how these five factors worked in concert to transform the course of American history. David has produced multiple books and scholarly articles relating to the War of Independence\, and his work has earned numerous accolades\, including recognition from the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Don’t miss this engaging and thought-provoking discussion of one of the most critical moments in the Revolutionary War. \nLocal Harvest Pizza and Rita’s Water Ice will be on-site. \nThe Friends of Washington Crossing Park also operate a concession stand serving hot dogs\, chips\, and beverages. Proceeds from the stand help support the Friends’ educational programming at the park. Food donated by Colonial Farms\, Dietz & Watson\, Herr’s\, Bimbo Bakeries\, and Wawa help us provide affordable food options for our visitors and refreshments for our volunteers. We are deeply grateful for their generous support. \nTickets are $9 for adults age 12 and over; $5 for children ages 5-11; and free for those under 5\, active-duty military\, and members of the Friends of Washington Crossing Park. Families with up to two adults and two children living in the same household can purchase a single-family ticket for $25. \nPre-registration is recommended. Admission to Bowman’s Hill Tower is included in your ticket to Living History Day. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture – “German Soldier\, American Rebel: Christopher Ludwick’s Pursuits of Happiness in Revolutionary Pennsylvania”
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThis is a hybrid event.  Visitors may attend in-person in the Visitor Center Auditorium or virtually on Zoom.  Registration is required.  Log-in information provided with registration. Register Here \nHessian-born Christopher Ludwick was already a veteran of European warfare and an experienced mariner by the time he washed ashore in British Philadelphia in 1755. A skilled baker\, he made that city his permanent home and\, through private frugality and industriousness\, realized great wealth and community status. When imperial politics thrust the British Empire into revolution\, however\, Ludwick became a dedicated supporter of America’s glorious cause. He ultimately dedicated the rest of his life to fighting oppression\, as his crusade continued beyond Yorktown. Indeed\, his efforts to help others continued posthumously\, beyond even the crushing silence of the grave. \nShawn David McGhee (PhD\, Temple University) is a political historian of eighteenth-century British North America and author of No Longer Subjects of the British King: The Political Transformation of Royal Subjects to Republican Citizens\, 1774-1776 (Yardley\, PA: Westholme\, 2024)

SUMMARY:Lecture – “The Fate of the Day” An Evening with Rick Atkinson
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAcclaimed author Rick Atkinson\, Pulitzer Prize winner\, and author of\, The British Are Coming and The Liberation Trilogy\, is returning to Washington Crossing Historic Park to discuss the 2nd entry in his ongoing Revolution Trilogy\, *The Fate of the Day*. Atkinson’s newest work picks up the history of the Revolution where he left off\, and covers the years of 1777-1780\, where the Continental army went through some of its toughest challenges. \nThis Lecture will take place on June 10th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. It will feature a lecture by Rick Atkinson on his new book\, as well as time for him to sign purchased books. Tickets are $40 to attend\, $65 to attend and get a copy of the book\, and $90 for two attendees and one copy of the book. Tickets can be purchased here\, they will not be sold “at the door”. Note: The event is currently at capacity\, however you can sign up for the waitlist by clicking on the booking link above then entering your contact info and how many tickets you need. \nThis lecture is presented in Partnership with the Princeton Battlefield Society as part of their Cadwalader Lecture Series and sponsored in part by the Sons of the American Revolution. \nAbout the Book:\nThe first twenty-one months of the American Revolution—which began at Lexington and ended at Princeton—was the story of a ragged group of militiamen and soldiers fighting to forge a new nation. By the winter of 1777\, the exhausted Continental Army could claim only that it had barely escaped annihilation by the world’s most formidable fighting force. \nTwo years into the war\, George III is as determined as ever to bring his rebellious colonies to heel. But the king’s task is now exponentially more complicated: fighting a determined enemy on the other side of the Atlantic has become ruinously expensive\, and spies tell him that the French and Spanish are threatening to join forces with the Americans. \nPrize-winning historian Rick Atkinson provides a riveting narrative covering the middle years of the Revolution. Stationed in Paris\, Benjamin Franklin woos the French; in Pennsylvania\, George Washington pleads with Congress to deliver the money\, men\, and materiel he needs to continue the fight. In New York\, General William Howe\, the commander of the greatest army the British have ever sent overseas\, plans a new campaign against the Americans—even as he is no longer certain that he can win this searing\, bloody war. The months and years that follow bring epic battles at Brandywine\, Saratoga\, Monmouth\, and Charleston\, an infamous winter of misery in Valley Forge\, and yet more appeals for sacrifice by every American committed to the struggle for freedom.
