Join us for the second lecture in our Fall Lecture Series with author Robb K. Haberman, who will discuss his book, “James Selkirk’s Revolutionary War.”
Register
“James Selkirk’s Revolutionary War” shares insight into James Selkirk’s memoir. Selkirk wrote about his experiences as a non-commissioned officer in the Continental Army and highlights the daily challenges faced by common soldiers. Though Selkirk died before his memoir could be published, his writings offer a rare personal perspective on the life of an enlisted soldier during the American Revolution.
Robb Haberman is a historian of early America who received his doctorate in history from the University of Connecticut. Robb has held visiting lectureships at Trinity College in Hartford and Colby College in Maine and currently serves as an adjunct assistant professor in the History Department at Fordham University. His work on politics, media, and memory in Revolutionary- era New York has appeared in several print and online publications, including the peer-reviewed journals New York History, Early American Studies, and American Periodicals. Robb also worked for seven years at Columbia University as an associate editor for the John Jay Papers. During this period, Robb helped produce volumes four through seven of The Selected Papers of John Jay, which were published by the University of Virginia Press and which also appear on Founders Online, a free and open-access database created by the National Archives. Robb’s current book is entitled James Selkirk’s Revolutionary War: The Memoir of a Continental Sergeant. This work examines the wartime experiences of a Scottish immigrant who came to New York in 1774, served over seven years in the Continental Army, and then authored an account of his military service. For his work on the Selkirk memoir, Robb has received fellowships from the American Philosophical Society and the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati.
Lectures will begin at 6 PM at the Old Barracks Museum, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be available.
